Bobber, I believe you are correct and the military was reduced by scrapping a policy that we had to maintain an army big enough to fight 2 conflicts. It was done under the guise of reducing the size of government. Of course it was only the military the was reduced.

This leads us to why the National Guard now has to play a larger part in fighting this war.

I don't know about you all, and I know it's a lot dependant on how you were raised, but I just have a problem with any female who can point a gun at one of God's creatures, and find pleasure at pulling the trigger, unless it is a matter of survival. Men are wired differently than women, and even tho I don't think killing for pleasure is an attractive attribute, I can almost allow men the task since they are the "providers." Women, on the other hand, are historically the nurturers, and to kill for pleasure is a concept I have a difficult time wrapping my head around. The best hunting can be done with a camera...not a gun.
I know I will take a few hits for this, but forgive me...I'm just sharing my views...

sunandsand, Feel free to share your views. I haven't hunted in the last 5 years, like you I still like to go out in the wild and observe. I guess I really only hunted ambitiously as a teenager, but I have known many women who hunt and never thought it odd.

To clarify, I read this morning that S.Palin is an avid outdoors person, loves to hunt and fish. I appreciate the love of the outdoors, but hunting, not so much. Any animal who suckles it's young has a heart, and loves it's babies....I don't get killing them unless it's to feed your family, and even then, only take what you need, not the biggest trophy...??? I just don't understand it.
Also, another point...I appreciate the pro-lifers, if they have adopted an unwanted child. There are so many in this world, and if you want to tell women what to do with their bodies, please be standing by to adopt that unwanted child who was conceived during a rape, or an incestual interlude, or has so many disabilities that it will live on a vegitative level for many, many years. I don't think abortion should be used as birth control, but it does have it's place...and it's none of YOUR business how a woman decides to deal with HER body, unless YOU are ready to adopt the child and devote your entire life to it.

Exactly. The miltary that President Clinton reduced was a military designed to fight a war with the Soviet Union. With that threat gone. Its only logical that you shrink it. That military was more then capable of defeating Afghanistan in 2002. Whats illogical is before completing that war is launching a second war againt a nation that had nothing to do with the attacks of 9/11. Even with that assinine move our military was still strong enough to defeat Saddams Army.



Fight ONE war at a time and there isnt a problem. When you start launching wars against countries like Iraq and Iran before completeing the previous war its a recipe for disaster.

Ragman, I knew that would be one of the arguments, and I agree...I am a little on the fence with the meat eating thing...but, I don't have to look in their eyes and feel a connection before I eat that burger.
As for women in the military, I think defending our freedom, our rights as Americans is a good reason to carry and use a gun. I don't think I could do it, but those who can, it is with a purpose. I have to say that even tho I don't support the war, I completely support our troops. Male and Female, they are there doing what they can do, because they love our country. I don't think you can compare the requirements of war to pleasure in hunting...or, maybe you can, but I don't think ANYONE fighting in the war finds pleasure in pullng the trigger, unless it's getting someone who has killed or hurt one of ours.
