FODOR’S CHOICES IN BELIZE

“Fodor’s Choice,” the highest possible rating in the Fodor’s travel guides, means that a place, hotel or restaurant is “so wonderful that its worthiness is obvious” or “so unique that superlatives don’t do it justice.” In the case of hotels and restaurants, the Fodor's Choices are not necessarily the most deluxe properties; rather, they are places of special appeal regardless of price.

Places, hotels and restaurant can also receive a Highly Recommended rating, meaning that these are praised for excellence and consistency. I’ll post these separately.

Also Highly Recommended:

Places, hotels and restaurants that are “praised again and again for excellence and consistency” get a star rating and a "Highly Recommended" in Fodor’s travel guides. Hotels and restaurants so rated may be in any price category.

These are the Highly Recommended places, hotels and restaurants in my Fodor’s Belize guidebook, just published.

(Also see the list of the very top-rated places, hotels and restaurants that earned the top Fodor’s Choice rankings, posted above.)

Lan: I went on the Actun Tunichil Muknal excursion this past summer and survived. As a 60 yr old of average condition...not good...I found the excursion very strenuous. Swimming into and out of the cave. walking through the water filed cave, and crawling up and down through the caverns was difficult. Then the taking off of shoes and walking in bare socks on the cavern floor was expecially difficult. The 20-25 year old "kids" did great!!! The tour guide was great...a very patient and knowledgable fellow. I was very grateful for his encouragement and assistance. This excursion is strenuous...and should be acknowledged as so. Bill

Bill,

I agree, and in my guidebooks I try to point out the physical challenges.

I do think it depends a little on when and with whom you go (both the group and the guide).

Thanks, Bill. I would never make it (older and more out of shape that you, my afriend). Lan, yes please include and warn us "older ones". Of course I know a 70 year old that can out do those 25's!

"Strenuous" is such a relative term. I'm older than Bill and I found ATM a breeze, a very enjoyable one.

I recall a guest of Protech who postponed his dive lessons because he was kayaking to Caye Caulker and back. Pretty strenuous, especially as he was 91!

True...there is no Ricter scale for strenuous. So, on the Thornton scale of strenuous...this cave rates a 7. I only brought this up because a stroke, heart attack or broken leg would dampen the joy of a nice vacation. We also lose some over the hill and out of condition divers.

My daughter (who is just 19, and in decent shape) did ATM a few months ago. She found the "balancing" in bare feet at some points somewhat more difficult than expected, but otherwise found it easy. I don't think I would do it again in my present physical condition, especially since my rheumatoid arthritis has flared up.
