A Tropic Air plane made what the company calls an emergency landing in Belize City yesterday morning. The pilot 33 year old Roy Bradley had just left the municipal airstrip and was flying four Americans to the Phillip Goldson International Airport when the engine apparently failed, onlookers said it caught on fire. He had few choices and few moments to make one. He chose to make the emergency landing, 20 feet off the coast of Belizean Beach.

I don't know them but the passenger names of David and Gay Yorke rings the bell of frequent message board posters. Glad to hear Roy the pilot did an outstanding job again, and hope all are well.

If the news story is correct, that is probably them. I met them very briefly years ago while dancing at the Hammock House. I hope they are okay.

Yes, it was Gay and David of the message board.
Minor cuts for Gay. David is in St. Luke's - Houston and has a broken neck. Thank God he is not paralized.
Many, many prayers and thanks to God our friends are ok!

Gay woke me up this morning to fill me in. She said, "We crashed on Tropic" and I thought she said they crashed in traffic (I'm not real with it when I first wake up).

They had a great week in San Pedro and were heading home on Sunday. Their Tropic flight stopped at Municipal on the way to International. They crashed on take off. They spent Sunday in the medical facility in Belize City and came back to Houston last night via air ambulance and then regular ambulance to St. Luke's hospital.

I will let you know more when I know more. As Debbie said, thank God David is not paralized but his left hand/arm is numb.

Please let me add that Gay said Tropic was wonderful and took care of their every need.

I just spoke to David and told him that was one helluva way to get attention.

He said he has two broken bones (vertebrae) in his neck but that they are "stable" fractures that should not require surgery but is awaiting an MRI to be sure.

Gay, I missed your call to me in the states, because I was in San Pedro. I must have left for the states just when you were arriving in San Pedro, and I’m very sorry to have missed you and David. I am extremely relieved to read that you are alright, and I wish David the most speedy and uncomplicated recovery possible. What a scary experience! Best to you two and to the rest of your fine family, Forrest (aka 2ndcab)

Dear David and Gay, I hope you are less shaken up now and healing quickly. That is definitely a story that will keep you in beers for many years to come!

Now does this mean you are up for a Boogie in Belize with Reaper now?

You are supposed to leave the plane up in the sky and come down with a chute on your backs.

Prayers and thoughts of well being.
Amanda

Is it my imagination, or are aircraft emergencies on our local services happening rather too frequently?

UPDATE! Just spoke to Gay and they are leaving the hospital at this very moment. From what I gathered quickly, the Dr. said they could fuse David's neck now or send him home with the neck brace for him to do absoultely nothing but they don't think he can do that. I guess only time will tell. They are very appreciative of all the prayers and well wishes. She will be posting soon.

P.S. Amanda I have been trying for years to get them to come to Boogie in Belize and jump with me. David & I both have Feb. birthdays. They have seen my video and Leah Ann & Travelqueen can tell the story of how many people it takes to hook up a DVD! wink

Spoke with Gay and David early yesterday. David was funny as usual and in very good spirits. Gay seemed a bit shook up still, saying she was thrown around the plane pretty well while they were going down. She said it happened very fast and that she felt like the pilot did exceptionally well given what he had to work with! David has two broken bones in his neck at the top of his spine. Neither bone is broken on the side of the spinal cord and the doctors are really hoping to avoid surgery. All in all both seemed to be doing very well and it was really good to hear their voices! smile

I know several people who've had that sort of injury, and in all cases they were VERY careful during the mending process but ultimately healed completely. Let's hope that applies to David.
