tacoboy and I are wondering if anyone here has been noticing a perfume taste to some foods.

It happened a while ago with tortillas and taco chips (Not from same store)and recently with cereal.

I've noticed that in the past with a lot of refrigerated products. One theory was a leak of freon into the food.

I would venture a guess that you are tasting some form of pesticide (fly spray.) The flour and cereal is subject to weevil infestations.

Makes you think twice about what you eat.

your grain-based experiences scare me. I care about you guys. Grain-based products are easy to spike with melamine or any variety of chemicals dangerous to you. Be careful!

YES! Finally someone else who detects it. I've been tasting that on the hand-fried chips and dried beans and rice for the past 10 years when in san pedro. mostly noticeable on grocery store items in plastic bags. We refer to it as 'the taste of belize' - i kinda miss it now that you mentioned it.

Yes, I've noticed it before too....not all the time and in different foods. Doesn't really scare me though, as in the past I worked in many restaurants and bars, and if that doesn't keep you from eating, nothing will.

um I have to disagree, if your food has a strange smell or taste (faint or barely noticible) something is wrong and you should either ask for a replacement or credit. There is no reason to 'chance' something if a store/restaurant had something go wrong (chicken get room temp by mistake) and then try to pass it off.
Just my opinion.

CBT you are correct. I definitely won't eat anything that has that smell.....seems to happen in waves here and is probably associated with chemical sprays like Amanda mentioned, because it is usually in corn/flour products. I have bought those gingersnap cookies at the bakery with it before too.

Replacement or credit? Well that depends on where you got it...especially down here.

Usually when it happens to me, I just avoid that product for a week or so and then it disappears.

In my lifetime there have been so many products, additives, chemicals that have been regulated out the wazoo by the FDA, some of which were legal for a big part of my life, I just can't get too worked up about it, especially here. Every time the big mosquito truck goes by our place, I get a whiff of a smell from my childhood, that you won't smell most places in the US anymore.

I won't eat food at a restaurant that doesn't taste good. I learned my lesson about that over five days several years ago.

One year we stayed at an inn that served a continental breakfast and I noticed a sweet but shouldn't be there taste. I figured out it must be the laundry detergent or fabric softener when one of the maids brought out refills. She came from the laundry room with another plate of pastries!

I call it "the smell of Belize" because each place we have stayed has the same sweet-like cleanser smell. When we get back home and I open our suitcases, the smell is always in it. I have found myself smelling some of the clothes (and smiling!) before I put them in the washer...is that sick or what???
