Europe has been doing this for years, but it's good to see that it's finally being applied elsewhere. The problem in Canada is that the bag quality is terrible, so you'll still need a bunch. Can't believe I just rambled on about plastic bags...

So how would you feel about 25cents for each Styrofoam take out box in San Pedro?

Even better if coupled with corn starch/bio degradable ones only allowed on the Island?

that veg-ware is a very cool and long-overdue product. i would be happy to pay 0.5 bz extra for them to use these instead of styrofoam. hell, i'd pay $1 bz more laugh

Archer Daniels (ADM) had products like these in the 80's but there was no consumer demand, and very high cost during the development stages

A friend brought over some take out the other night in a biodegradable styrofoam container. It would be great if we had a bylaw requiring all vendors to use them.

The regular styrofoam containers are kind of biodegradable, not. After sitting on the side of the road for several months, they break into a million pieces when you try to pick them up during a litter pickup!!!!!!!

In principal, I totally agree with you, but looks like they are even having a struggle in Hawaii with using them.

In Belize, it would seem to me that by the time they were imported by the GOB (if they were to be mandatory), then the price raised by the GOB to the vendors, then another price raise by the vendor to the consumer, it could put another $2.00 BZ at least on each take out order.

This article seems to suggest there are other problems with the containers...including leakage.

Not sure why GOB would have to be involved in the import of the containers....just another pocket to fill !

A sponsorship by a company such as Crystal, Coke or Belikin to brand the boxes and distribute from a central point could cover the cost of the containers, and a $.50 or $1 fee per box would encourage the use of customers own containers?

For this to work, no non recyclable containers could be allowed on the island and business licensing would have to be tied to use of recyclables, all of which may prove daunting for San Pedro?
