We are moving back to the States and I need to convert our Belize assets to something accepted in the US. I tried our bank (Scotia) but they really don't do wire transfers in amounts that make sense. Any ideas or experiances out there. Are money orders or Western Union an option? I am driving back through Mexico, would exchanging BZ$ for Pesos at Chetumal and then Pesos to US$ at Brownsville work?

hpvpaul2,
I would go and talk to the people at Belize Bank or Atlantic. I think you are going to have to set up an off shore account which can be done at either of these. When I was making inquires on this subject I was advised that Scotia Bank was not the best for this. I have brought money in using both of these banks but haven't done the reverse.

I'll be very interested in the solution to your problem, although I have no need at present. I hope some one with more knowledge answers you. Please post the solution when you get it figured out.

It seems to me that it would be expensive and risky to bring money in through Mexico as you decribe. Good luck

Maybe ask around some of the Hindu shops in Belize City ... ? Guess it depends on the amount your talking about.

If you can show proof of your ticket for international air travel and your passport then you can typically be able to exchange Bz up to $500 US cash at the bank. The bank has to apply for a foreign exchange permit for you so I don't think you can then go to another bank and try again. However I do think that they can raise your limit with justifiable cause. If it is a lot of money - ie you are leaving the country forever, you might be able to get a US $ cashiers cheque. When you arrive at your new destination you can deposit the cheque and wait about a week or so for you cheque to clear.

In most towns there are money exchangers - especially border towns and typically the hindu and indian stores are glad to exchange for a fee.

Amanda, I went into the Belize Bank about three weeks ago to convert some of my money in our Belize Bank account to US and they told me they would only convert $250.00......yet I could bring all the US I wanted to deposit into my account and they'll take it all. Doesn't make sense.....easy to put it in....hard to take it out!

Not up to the bank. They must get approval from Central Bank to release US$...there's a perpetual shortage.

I have occassionaly caught a US citizens coming into the country and been able to exchange some BZ to US. I have also thought of doing as you suggested at Chetumal, but at the boarder those guys will convert to US. The question is how much? I would go see about wiring the funds to the States from Chetumal, never good to carry large sums of money.
Going to the bank is a waste of time - I have tried that one too.
Don't forget us when you figure out a way HVP.....

Hey Indy,

I was just in Chetumal and the exchange rate was $12 US - $100 Pesos or $6 Belize. It has been all the way up to $14 US recently, but as of last Sunday, that was the rate. I just had my taxi driver take me to his "favorite" cash exchanger at the border.

Understand the reality: The Belize dollar is virtually worthless beyond a few miles from the Belize border. It is not an exchangeable currency.
