I've noticed a lot of Blogs for Belize. Most of them are just telling of their experiences in Belize, some have turned into internet newspapers. For the ones that are a "Online newspaper" what are the legalities of these papers? Can the one-man (woman)-operation say and do whatever they want to publish. Can they do character assassination of people they don't like? When they include a Message Board in the blog that does not require validation of writer. Can they print lies to try and discredit a person. Can they publish an editorial without checking it out? Or do they have to answer to the same code of a legal Newspaper? Is there such a thing as a code of ethics? Are they liable to be sued for abuse of power?

In the past, I've seen when a thread gets out of hand, Marty, you just kill the thread. But what happens when the person who owns the blog rather keep a character assignation going because she feels that "it's good reading?". What are the options available?

Depends on the laws of the country that the Blog is based in.
For example you can say things in the US that will get you in
trouble in the UK. I would suggest you look up Belize laws on
slander and libel (assuming blog is based in Belize) and see
what the laws say. If you know anyone in the print media in
Belize they might be able to give you help.

Zardos, if the blog is worldwide, based on Belize and the writer is in the US, wouldn't it be US laws?

No such thing as worldwide from a legal concept. The server
(computer you keep your blog on and serve from it)if it is
Belize is under Belize law. If the server is in the US than
you are under US law. If you are using a US server and
create your blog in the US you can pretty much say what you
want. However if the server is in Belize I would check on
the appropriate laws. Many countries have stricter laws than
US law regarding libel and slander (or loss of business or
whatever). Please also note many countries don't enforce the
laws until you draw attention to yourself. I would be careful
if you are poking politicians in a small country. Post the
rules and remove anything against the rules and you will be
just fine. Of course this whole conversation is in a general
sense as I don't know what you are going to write on your
blog. Personally unless you are going to poke someone powerful
I would not worry about such stuff.

EEF website is about US law only. If you search from this
web page it does have some International info offered which
might help others outside the US.

The more I research, the more I find! To be honest with you, I have been libeled about so much on the message boards, blogs ect. that I decided that there must be some way to stop these abusive people. There is....... When you can see the violations listed on the site above, simply do this:

You can find lots of info, mostly about the owner of a website, by going to www.whois.net and entering the domain name. Also listed there will be the name of the company where a website is hosted

Once you get this information. Just email them a letter and the link where the violations are written. They will do the rest. We really need to not sit still and take abuse. These people need to be made responsible for their abuse.
