Hi Canukgirl,
I'm not an expert on the Cayo District, but since no one has made suggestions, I'll throw in my 2 cents.

My top choices for a short trip:

ATM - (for me) is a "must see" ; a great mix of adventure, culture & nature.

Caracol - is a wonderful Mayan site.

Mountain Pine Ridge & Rio Frio Cave - Gorgeous Pine Forest for hiking & exploring. Cave area has several pools & waterfalls to swim in.

As far as Bus transport goes from BC here is the National Bus schedule:

Have a great trip

P.S. - be very careful around if you go to the El Pilar area, I ran into 2 back-packers the other day, who were robbed by knife point.

They were told (after-the-fact) that robbery had been a problem in that area.

There are six or seven bus lines on the Western Highway route. Buses leave every hour, or more frequently, from the "Novelo's terminal" all day and into the early evening. Any bus with Cayo, Benque or San Ignacio on the front; in some cases it may say Belmopan.

For ATM you will need to take a tour (going with a guide licensed for ATM is required). I like PACZ, which has an office on Burns Ave. in downtown San Ignacio, near Eva's. You'll pay US$80 for a full-day trip, including transportation to and from ATM and a simple lunch.

If you don't have time for Caracol (another full-day trip) at least do Xunantunich.
