OK I tried searching for the anwer but could not find anything (even though I am sure it has been asked before).

Are American Express Credit cards accepted in San Pedro?

For some reason I am thinking that very few (if any) accept them.

Thanks

Gail, for years American Express was the only credit card I had. I used it all over San Pedro and encountered only a very few places that didn't take it.

I can never remember which is better . . . safe? . . . or sorry?

Great thanks for the info. My friend who is coming with me this trip uses AM so I wanted to make sure she wouldn't encounter any issues.

I have had no problems with AMEX in SP. I'm sure there are still some that don't take it, but I haven't found any. I have only used my AMEX at restaurants. Ask first and go elsewhere if necessary.

Amex doesn't always work. They charge Merchants more than Visa and MasterCard (double for my Merchant account) so some people don't accept it. Amex Travellers Cheques are a different story.

I could be mistaken but it seemed that when I used my AMEX, during one Belize trip, the fees were more than when I used VISA. I hate fees of any kind so I "leave home without it".

You're right TQ. The fees are about twice as high for businesses to run it too. We don't take it.

Tsunami Skydivers Inc. only accepts cash or Mastercard/Visa. The AMEX fees are ridiculous to the merchants.
