I am arriving Sunday and will be bringing a suitcase full of schoolbooks for the Holy Cross School. Is Customs going to let me through with these or will there be a heavy duty?

Let the customs agent know that they are for Holy Cross School and not for resale. You should be fine. If he demands payment, offer to leave them there and the school will file the forms necessary to receive them.

Thanks. I may try to get the Holy Cross School to send me an "official" letter saying they are expecting the books, etc. Otherwise, I could do as you say and leave them with Customs. Appreciate the input.

Even with the letter you could be subject to duty. I've had letters from the library before and sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. However, even when they did insist on charging duty it was never more than $10 or $15 US, which is a lot cheaper than someone having to get back and forth from the island to pick them up if left.

I can never remember which is better . . . safe? . . . or sorry?

I brought in two duffel bags full of books (47 lbs each) in
November of last year for my local village elementary school.
Didn't have any problems getting my books thru customs and other than the fact that they did look in the two bags that was it, no charge.

I am bringing in another two duffel bags next trip.
