For those who weren't there the Department of the Environment finally
admitted today that they had not actually issued a Stop order to South
Beach Development even though they realize that South Beach
Development are breaking the Law by not sticking to the Environmental
compliance plan. No one seems to be able to explain why the department
was not willing to issue a Stop Order. The group agreed tonight that
we should all ask the DOE why they were not up holding the law and
making South Beach Development comply with the law. We should all do
this by either phoning or faxing them over the next couple of days as
many times as we can.

The facts - The ECP states the SBD needs to pay a bond of $250,000bz,
this bond must be paid 30 days prior to the commencement of
development activity. SBD has not paid the bond, therefore is not
allowed to commence any development activity. They have started
surveying, cutting mangroves to run survey lines and have moved sand
into the area for roads. The Doe have been shown pictures of this
activity.

The people to call - Martin Alegria - Chief Environmental officer,
Maxine - DOE officer, Anthony Mai - DOE officer
Phone number - 822-2816, 822-2542
Fax number 822-2862

An additional item that might be stressed to the DOE when calling, is that if they refuse to enforce the order, mainstream media will be contacted. You know they are currently trying to get people to vote for Matt Lauer's trip to Belize as some sort of promo,,,,well, if he finds this out, it may not be the kind of publicity they want.

It is important to pull in the mainstream media in a positive light. Also, the group that stopped the Placencia insane project contacted World heritage, Audobon and other groups that bring money and grants to Belize. They actually threatened to withdraw all funds if the project went through and GOB put a stop to it.
I would add that the town council should simply confiscate any equipment on the SB site that should not be there. It will certainly help increase their vehicle inventory and maybe cause enough pain to the developer to get him to stop and wait for permits. Maybe they can confiscate the 9 unpermitted buildings at RV for affordable housing purposes.

uuhhh,, i don't think that's correct.
that project got all the green lights it ever needed.
it apparently just fizzled out all on it's own.

edit: there has not been a single mega project dis-approved here.
the only one that pulled out on it's own was the fish farm due to public outcry. and everyone assumes it would have been approved as well.

double edit: and there are plenty of big projects who never even had eia's or public consultations! the biggest one just,,, started building. nothing has changed from the musa daze.

I know of 2 megaprojects that were stopped, the cruise ship road over the mangoes to the manatee area. That was stopped by public outcry led by Annie and Chocolate in Caye Caulker. And the one on the north of the island that was permitted with a Korean developer. It was stopped by public outcry in San Pedro. The only way SB is stopped is by making it more uncomfortable for politicians to approve than to deny it.

And the only way to do that is to withdraw money.

we attended last nights meeting and see that there are some smart people on our side,Harriette brought up the board as a vehicle to help support the group, they are fervent for the cause and seem to have a good game plan

pamkillen,,

i was referring to projects on the peninsula. everything is green-lighted.

barbra k, yes,, ara macoa.

i hope that the larger numbers you have up there will help to show the GOB your valid concerns.
we can't even get them to respond to some simple questions. total silence like it is none of the publics business what they do at DOE.
