There was just an alleged sexual attack of a tourist.

The same night that the alleged attack happened, some people who were staying in Diane's Guest house next to Sailwinds and Auxillou Beach Suites was robbed in the middle of the night while sleeping. Apparently when they reported it the police asked "what do you expect us to do about it". This island is getting scarier each time we visit. This may be our last visit here.

I am one of many who are trying to do something about it.
one the other hand...Have you ever had stuff stolen from your house in the States? In my case several times and the US police ask me what they should do about it.
It pissed me off but they really have limited options in a theft of some one who is leaving. Search the streets for some one with money in their pocket?
When Val was attacked they did a massive all night manhunt, dragged in a lot of criminals, and nailed the guy in a matter of hours. He had committed a violent crime against a witness who will be there in court. People came in starting at dawn with leads.
This crime comes to us from San Pedro and Belize City. We bring them from here to prison as fast as we can, but the outside world has an unlimited supply of a**holes.

And San Pedro gets 'em from Caye Caulker. It all goes round and round..but no island is immune.

The criminals come in droves for the big tourist weekends, such as carnival.

This has been discussed before, but these are Caye Caulker and San Pedro are islands with limited ways to travel there. I thought that the boats were going to put a formal process in place to register travelers, but obviously they have not...

Crime is a world wide thing.....no place is immune to it.
I live on the outer barrier islands in the USA in North Carolina on Hatteras Island..and we have very little crime compared to other places BUT we do still have some crime....no way to get away from it.
If in all areas of the world it was handled as it should be...such as public executions and floggings you would see a dramatic drop in crime.
I was in CC the first 2 weeks of October last year and wandered the streets about half drunk all hours of the day and night and felt perfectly safe....greatest vaction I ever had....looking forward to coming back

Man oh man how times have changed, my first trip to CC was back in 94 or 95 (You could not get into too much trouble, they turned off the power generators sometime between 10 and midnight) and the big crime back then that shook the island was somebody broke into Atlantic bank and cleaned it out at night. How did they do it you ask, dynamite.... cutting torch... ripped the vault door off its hinges with a truck... Nah they just used a hacksaw to cut through the burglar bars on the outside window. Total haul something like $2400 U.S. The other crime that occurred while I was their was a an elderley German tourist who wore way too much in gold for anyones own good was robbed outside the grocery store on the back street by the school. Some of the locals caught up with the guy and handled that one themselves. Does anyone know if the Seahorse dive shop and the M&M "hotel" are still around it was next door to the soccer field. Spent 8 weeks of my life bumming around that island and I chose to never go back, just because I like the memories of how it was. I have returned to Belize six more times since then and spent a considerable amount of time on AC
