I guess it is safe to say that the friendship between Hon. Dean Barrow and his former client Michael Ashcroft will not heal anywhere soon: Ashcroft's provocations have been successful and our PM announced that his lordship is close to aquiring another official title: "enemy of the people".

And today in his budget speech, the Prime Minister took a detour within his address to take a special swipe at an unnamed entity who is bedevilling the government. It was an unusual turn and both the language and the revelation were startling.

Hon. Dean Barrow, Prime Minister

“Now Mr. Speaker there are those that have formally leagued themselves and their television station with the opposition. The same opposition that when it was government was their quizzling and cat’s paw. They have done this because our defense of the national interest has curbed their exploitation and cut them down to size. So they use their power, wealth, and global influence to bad mouth us. They actually got in touch with Moody’s to quarrel about the upgrade that that rating agency gave to Belize. I think members on both sides of the aisle need to recognize that this is pretty much approaching an attack on our national sovereignty. This particular individual that I am talking about is very close to approaching acquiring the status of an enemy of the people.”

And while Barrow reserved his venom for the personality, Michael Finnegan was not so reserved. His issue is with Channel 5 – which is owned by BTL. He says as far as he is concerned that media house is an enemy of the UDP government. His complaint was about a story that Channel 5 ran last week questioning the eligibility of Mayor Zenaida Moya. The story was a decoy because it was an issue that the PUP had decided not to raise mainly because one of their candidates had his own residence issue. Obviously, the issue did not affect the outcome of the election, but Finnegan says it was pure malice.

Hon. Michael Finnegan, Minister of Housing

“This didn’t come from the mainstream media. The mainstream media is considered Amandala Partridge Street component, The Reporter, Channel 7, Plus TV – that is what is viewed as the mainstream media. That came as malice from the PUP Channel 5 television newscast which I refused an interview with them. I refused to have them interview me on election morning and on election evening and I made it clear to them that this is a PUP station that is set out to destroy the government and the UDP.

Now let’s get back to the mainstream media. The mainstream media was tough but it was fair, it was constructive. It was doing what the media should be doing in an election time for our country. So don’t let us mix up the grapes and the oranges and the bananas in one. Channel 5 is a PUP station that is being reorganized with lots of money to destroy the government of Belize and the UDP.”

Jules Vasquez,
The owner of that or the one who controls the controlling interest in the parent company of Channel 5 is your good friend Mr. Ashcroft. I hope you’ve raised this subject with him.

Hon. Michael Finnegan,
“We will not get personal and I will not get into name calling. Channel 5 is an instrument that must not be viewed in line with the mainstream media. The mainstream media I repeat is tough and is fair.”

Last week Barry appeared on his TV channel and now he has closed ranks with Stan Marshall from BEL. The plot thickens...

BEL boss Stan Marshall and the man who controls the majority holdings in Telemedia Michael Ashcroft have bitterly criticized the government for what they say is regulatory mismanagement and administrative incompetence. And now the embittered investors have formed an alliance that could have a significant effect on the future of telecommunications in Belize.

In a joint release, they today announced that they have started installing a fibre optic cable along the 115 kv transmission line between Belize City and Belmopan.

It will be BTL’s second fibre optic line to Belmopan and it comes at a cost of $4 million. The company says it is part of its overall expansion plan. The project will finish in April of 2009.

Yesterday, Belize Electricity Limited and Telemedia issued a joint release regarding fiber optic cables that Telemedia is installing on B.E.L.’s poles between Belize City and Belmopan. The basis for the release, according to B.E.L., was to point out that short power outages during the installation process could be expected. But an editorialized item on Channel Seven’s newscast has prompted a response from B.E.L. who referred to the story as mischievous and the utility company is demanding an apology for (quote) “the attack on the credibility of B.E.L. and Telemedia.” B.E.L. further states that the report also failed to “inform viewers of other critical information, including the fact that all other cable companies in Belize, including Channel Seven’s Tropical Vision in Belmopan, currently run their cable wires on B.E.L.’s distribution system countrywide”.

A very smart move from Michael - have you ever met him? He's really a nice guy, humble and down to earth. Just remember that in business he's always got the upper hand - he always wins!

In an interesting manoeuvre, Telemedia today announced that it has assigned a subsidiary called Belize Social Development Limited to distribute that $38.5 million award amongst its shareholders.

That means that the Hayward Charitable Trust would get almost three quarters, exactly $26.5 million of that $38.5 million and according to a release from Telemedia would then distribute that, quote “solely to registered charities in Belize.” And to take it one step further and put pressure on government, Hayward is asking all charities to send in their requests for donation to the Trust.

Nothing was publicly known of Hayward - which holds controlling interests in BTL until three months ago when it was announced that the Trust was buying into the Superbond.

Charities? Not hardly. The directors are all Ashcroft people doing Ashcrofts bidding.
