On Friday, April 17, Deputy Prime Minister Gaspar Vega, the Minister of Natural Resources visited Ambergris Caye with the Heads of the Department of the Environment, Forestry, Geology, Lands and his Chief Executive on the invitation of the Ambergris Caye Citizens for Sustainable Development.

The morning and early afternoon were spent on a guided tour of the proposed South Beach Development site to see the sensitive nature of the area and the fish and wildlife that the developer claims do not exist. They were also taken to the Hol Chan Marine Reserve to highlight the proximity of the South Beach Development to the most visited marine park in Belize.

Later Hon. Minister Heredia, Mayor Paz and Deputy Mayor Nesto Gomez joined the group to view a presentation by the ACCSD on the disastrous effect the South Beach Development will have on Ambergris Caye and the islands tourism industry, as well as to discuss other pressing issues currently having a detrimental effect on the Natural resources of Ambergris Caye.

The group was given the opportunity to review the comments of hundreds of members of the ACCSD as well as read letters from concerned citizens, visitors and investors that are very concerned with this project.

The meeting was very positive with both Minister Heredia and Mayor Paz re-emphasizing their continued opposition to the South Beach development. Minister Vega and his departments went away with a better understanding of why the South Beach development is unsustainable and unsuitable for Ambergris Caye. - Press Release, ACCSD -
