Are you sure the season opens in 12 days? If so when does it close?

Here is the scoop on lobster...

No one can tell how plentiful or not the season will be and from past
seasons the numbers have been dwindling.

At the open of the season, June 15th, lobster sells for $20.00 Bze per
pound. After the initial rush of the season the price per pound stabilizes
around $18.00. Buyers will sometime get a way with a minimum offer of $17.00.

Second grade lobster which is illegal is sometimes available at $10.00 per
pound. But be advised that the penalties are steep for being in possession
of second grade lobster.

A lobster must weight 4 ounces and above for it to be legal and purchased
at any cooperative or store. Second grade lobster is normally returned to
vendors with little supervision or reprimand by the appropriate authorities
on the grounds that individual vendors or fishermen will use such lobster
for personal consumption.

The bottom line is that a lobster meal ranges from $40.00 to $55.00 in most
restaurants.

That's in US dollars...

Marty,
Thank you so very much for the info. I was getting a lot of conflicting information. I do have one other question though. Will hurricane Keith affect the lobster season this year at all, and if so, in what way? Make it better, since havesting was probably stopped or reduced for a while afterward, or worse?

Marty,

I would think that would be in Belize dollars? At a "regular" good restaurant (I'm not including the really fancy places like Mambo), I don't think I've ever paid more than US$20 or $22 for lobster dinner. Of course, that's not for a huge amount of lobster but with the sides it's plenty.

It came as a surprise to us two weeks ago but found extra large lobsters at Fidos at AC. If you don't think one lobster is enough, ask your server what a second one would cost. He or she will accomodate you.

One more question: We are returning to AC next week (Feb. 7). Does Cannibals have lobster?

I left San Pedro Jan. 23rd after 10 days of Lobster consumption. The most expensive and best was at Los Cocos: Two lobster tails (grilled) with Lime, French fries and slaw for $35 BZ ($l7.50 US).
At the Chinese restaurant it was $20 BZ ($10 US) for big hunks of lobster in a tempura type batter with the freshest lettuce, cucumbers and tomatoes imaginable. Had Lobster Omelet at Lily's too many days - yummy! Served with potatoes and Johnny Cakes. I think it was $14 BZ ($7 US)

With lobster season closing on the 14th, does that mean lobster will be unavailable, or just no more new catches? We will be arriving in SP on the 17th. Hoping to at least get lobster once while I'm there.
