I am looking for a place to stay on Ambergris. What do you know about The Village? Why is it so cheap?

Its closer to the back side, a touch south, and just remodeled after it was taken back over by the previous owners. They had sold it to someone who left after Keith...

Why is it cheap? First and most importantly, because it's not on the sea. It's one of the very few "resorts" on the entire island that is not on the Caribbean. Second, because it has had a long, spotted history. Resort, would-be condo development, apartments, I don't know what all, under more than one owner.

When I corresponded with The Village, they told me that due to Keith they wouldn't open for another year....guess those thatched huts didn't weather in the storm well

Also.. try the San Pedrano Hotel.. its another budget place. The rooms are clean, good beds and quiet, right on Barrier Reef Drive, near the Conch Shell Motel.

The Village as you see it on the website is nothing like that now.

When I first came here 14 months ago....I lived at The Village for a month until an apt. became available.

They had quite a long spell of mis-management and the "resort" had fallen into a state of dis-repair.

It has not been called The Village in quite a long time......they just have not bothered to have the website updated.
It is called Mayas Katut now.
Most of the rooms are rented out to medical students as it is within easy walking distance of the medical school.

They had severe damage during the hurricane, and have since replaced a lot of the thatched roofs with new tin roofs.

You will need plenty of OFF bug repellent if you stay there as it is located back towards the lagoon side.

I would recommend stay closer in town. There are plenty of budget accommodations in town.

Rubies, Coral Beach, Lily's, San Pedrano, Martha's, etc.
