Does anyone know what was behind it? It went off at 11:35pm and was certainly still off 4 hours later, though by some time this morning it was back on.

They announced in the Mexican newspaper that there will be power outages rolling area by area, countrywide. Because of low rainfall this year, their hydroelectric plants are not putting out as much current and they are not able to keep up with the demand.

LoveFM reports that the outage was nationwide and caused by a failure on the 115KV line near Mascal. The northern part of Belize is presently powered from Mexico while the central, west and south is powered by local sources. BEL crews are working to repair the fault.

Yes, now while the repairs are underway. After that it may be Mexico or could be Belize depending on daily situation.

It's strange, because I was talking with a business owner yesterday afternoon who was expecting a power outage and was trying to confirm it with BEL. Presumably this was an unexpected power outage, because I can't believe they'd have a planned one for most of a night. So what had alerted this business owner?
