i did rio un pools, there is also the rio frio cave there (awesome), and the jungle, xunantunich etc in 1993. you really have to stay there (mainland) to see that stuff, at least for a few days. our second trip, we hung out on AC & did the diving thing. you cant see the whole country in a week, and still relax. i suggest you make 2 trips there, or stay a few days in Cayo to see the western sights. it is worth it. there is even a place you can horseback ride thru the jungle: banana bank ranch. BUT, you cant do it all from AC. our '93 trip, we did 7 days on mainland, 3 on AC.

I agree Deb... You need more time or more trips! Otherwise you'll need a vacation when you get home!

Altun Ha is a nice, easy day trip from Ambergris Caye, little hiking. A nice plus is they usually stop at Maruba Jungle spa for lunch. Lamanai is also done by boat from the island, you see more, it involves alot more walking, and also cost more. If you don't stay in the jungle, I would recommend one of these for a day trip from the island.

Sorry I have not gotten back to all of you. Been working to make some more money for our trip.
Alta Ha sounds like what we want to do. From what I understand it might be better for us to fly over to the mainland, do you know how much that costs and where we would catch the plane? Can you make arrangements from Caribbean Villas for Alta Ha and flight over?
Do we have to bring our own snorkle equipment to snorkle behind the Caribbean Villas. Can you snorkle there?
Thanks again
Deb

Deb: for Altun Ha they tour operator will pick you up in his boat for the ride over. No need to fly. It's a great trip across the lagoon.
Bring your own snorkel equipment it fits the best. You can snorkel off most any dock, just watch out for boat traffic.
Enjoy.

Thanks for response. From what I understand the boat trip over is about an hour and a half compared to 15 minutes on plane. What would be the cost for a flight over and cost for boat trip, do you know? Thanks again.

Do not miss the snorkeling at Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley. It will be a great experience. Where else do you get to scratch the tummy of a Nurse Shark, just resting there like a baby. WOW! Large Rays rubbing your shoulders with their wet velvet wings, you will be Blessed. Enjoy!
I snorkeled under Ramon's pier, and the water felt cooler than the water out at Hol Chan. Point being do not judge the water temp, by the temp under the piers. Feels warmer away from the shore.

Hi,
It may be a 15 minute flight to the mainland but then you have to get to the ruins. That is a road trip north. I can't remember exactly how long it takes, but probably around an hour drive time one way. Then you have to drive back into Belize City for your return flight. So, you really aren't saving time by flying and you are spending more. I don't have the rates in front of me but it will probably cost you about $50 more per person if you fly to the city.

Deb: Karen is correct you will not save any time and I do not believe you will save money. Typical trip via boat from A.C. should be about $125.00 pp including everything except lunch & souvenirs. Not sure what the cost of trip to Altun Ha is from Belize City but since it will cost you $100.00 to get there I have to think it would be more than the $25.00 difference between taking the boat.
Besides trip across via speedboat is great.

Enjoy
