I will be bringing a kayak down to AC in December and will be chaining it up (outdoor) at my condo when I leave. My question is how safe is that ... should I try to get insurance? Would a simple chain work or should I be looking for titanium?

All kidding aside, what's the best way to keep a kayak safe?

Is there any chance that the Kayak will go inside your Condo? If so, then you have a way better chance of it being there when you return.....("Out of sight....Out of mind") Also, do you have/trust the security people at your condo?....or is that an option? I would not leave it outside!...not a good idea....even with it chained down. There is an old thread on this forum, from a person who had an antique Anchor stolen from his yard, and i believe he had stated, that it was chained down, and still it was stolen. Store your Kayak out of sight....less worries for you. If it is out in the open, sure as hell the crooks will devise a way to scoff it.

It's a tandem Kayak so it's about 14 feet long, storing it inside isn't an option as the condo is in a rental pool when we aren't there. I can check with the management company for storage. If they don't offer it is there inexpensive storage available somewhere? Would insurance help me out, or is it even available for something like a kayak?

I've personally never heard of Kayak insurance? smile But if worse comes to worse you can always keep it at my house... I'll keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't get stolen... I'll also keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't float away while I'm out in the water....ooops...did I say that out loud

Wouldn't the kayak be covered under your condo insurance like patio furniture, bbq, bicycle etc.?
