The Department of Education is having a meeting tonight at the High
School Auditorium. The meeting will be addressing the plan to have a
vocational school in San Pedro. The department of education would
like members of the business community to attend and provide feedback
for what type of training is needed.

As a teacher here in the states I wish we would look more into vocational type programs. They have been the first to be cut. Not everyone wants (can) go to college.

My middle son (16) just started a culinary program offered by the Vo-Tech part of our school district. He had to get over the stigma of attending the Vo Tech (very looked down upon by the college prep type HS students & teachers) but now LOVES it. Comes home excited from school every day - haven't seen that since kindergarten! Learning great useful daily living stuff. And I love the "homework" - makes dinner, bakes on the weekends, etc. ;-)
I think Belize has a good Vo Tech and Agro program for students - at least on the mainland....And I know in years past Johnson & Wales Culinary Program in Rhode Island has come to Belize to train chefs periodically. Maybe they can offer some HS programs as well.

I spent 10 years teaching at a vo-tech school in Corozal.
I am pleased that, at last.
they are thinking of opening a vo-tech school here. As said before there are many kids that can not go to the regular acedemic schools. I have had talks with various members of the town council and government over the past 3 years and even put together a feasibility
paper for the implementation of such a program.

I hope it comes true. The kids here will really benefit from such a program if it is implemented correctly.
