US Airways Expands Central and South America for Customers Through TACA Codeshare Agreement

TEMPE, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--With recent approval from the U.S. Department of Transportation, US Airways (NYSE: LCC) customers will be able to enjoy expanded travel between the United States and destinations in Central and South America, thanks to a new codeshare agreement between TACA Airlines and US Airways beginning Jan. 12, 2010. Flying will be open for sale beginning Dec. 5 at usairways.com and through global distribution channels.

The codeshare agreement will complement existing US Airways flying to Mexico, Costa Rica, Belize and beginning Dec. 15-Rio de Janeiro, Brazil-from its Charlotte, N.C., hub.

With this new agreement, US Airways customers traveling from the United States to Latin America will be able to connect on flights operated by TACA Airlines. Through TACA's hubs in San Salvador, El Salvador; San Jose, Costa Rica; and Lima, Peru, US Airways customers can travel on a single ticket to those countries, as well as Guatemala, Belize, Honduras and Nicaragua.

Conversely, TACA customers gain greater access to US Airways' markets in the United States and beyond through connecting opportunities in Charlotte.

US Airways Senior Vice President Marketing and Planning Andrew Nocella said, "Our codeshare offerings continue to expand for our customers in 2010, which means more destinations in more countries. Customers can book these flights directly from US Airways and enjoy convenient ticketing and baggage connectivity just as they would on a US Airways-operated flight."

"Through this agreement we can deliver an improved travel experience for TACA and US Airways passengers," said TACA Corporate Development Vice President Alex Benitez. "Opportunities like these are driven by our concern for our customers' needs and ultimately contribute to ensure high levels of customer satisfaction, one of our main business goals."

Nice! So this will open up flights from Canada to C.A. as well. A word of caution... if you use USAirways via Charlotte to return to Canada you must claim your luggage at Charlotte and go through customs then place it on the transit belt (as well as go through immigration and security). Depending on your connection this can make it challenging. Continental will check your luggage right through to Canada.

Really? Interesting.

I also am curious about this: Since USAir is part of the Star Alliance, I wonder if their partners (read United and Continental for this purpose) will also codeshare w/TACA.

Hmm Interesting question. TACA is only a possible future member of Star Alliance for now. Air India, Aegean and TAM will join in 2010. Wonder if one airline of the alliance can codeshare without the others, doesn't seem possible since the purpose of the alliance is to be able to get anywhere with good connections and one ticket and to share frequent flyer miles.

Just read that TACA already code shares with United (and exchanges frequent flyer miles) and Lufthansa, so I guess they can code share with individual airlines but not all within the alliance.

Still seems way cheaper to go through cancun > chetemul, was compairing prices. Then again who knows, I dont know anything about kayak.com hidden fees etc yet. (input?)

Last I looked:

Then Cancun - Chetumal on bus, and taxi/ferry to san pedro? Depending on the fees that could make for a super cheap one way trip.

When I checked out taca.com The closest airport to me was Chicago, and flights around that same day from Chicago to Belize City were around $398.00 with 2 stops and a travel time around 8 hours.

I've never made the trip this way, so if Im missing anything please let me know. Otherwise Taca has a bit of work to do to get my business smile
