This picture entitled 'Out on the town, young people dance away a Saturday night in Placencia, a fishing village. Their dance hall--the post office--also does duty as grocery store and community center'was taken in Placencia'. See p128 of the 1969 National Geographic edition of Belize entitled "Belize, the Awakening Land" by Louis De La Haba and photographed by Michael E. Long both National Geographic staff. The featured article on Belize is from pp124-146. I know because the female dancer is myself, Mrs. Jennifer Alexis Hyde nee Gentle, living in Belize City.
This is such a cool pic and so good to get the info on those in the photo. This article was reissued in 1971, bound in a Nat Geo cover, and they were free at Taca Airlines ticket counter. I picked mine up there in 72 and still have it.
thanks jd,i was just in the right place at the right time.the child and her family sell things in front of tanisha tours across from bc's.very sweet people!
I mess with them in photoshop... remove detail, or add detail, remove contrast, add contrast. basically i play with them for awhile. tweak them with filters and exposure manipulations...
Although the original photograph is good and the colorized photo is artistic, the scene is one of environmental destruciton that should make Belizians angry. Dredging a straight channel through a caye, destroying mangroves, filling in shallow island habitat, ruining the homes of native fish and wildlife...all for short-term profit. Ugh!
