This is great. I can't figure out whether it thought it got a cool shell house on a short sale or the biggest toy ever smile

Speaking of that octopus (which was hysterical!) what is the best place and time to spot one of these cool creatures? I ran into a few in Cozumel but after 5 trips to Belize, haven't seen one. And I mean while snorkeling, not diving. Thanks in advance, Underwater Fans!

Do a night snorkel. Takes a bit of courage but well worth it.

yep, Night snorkels and night diving at Hol Chan almost always produce an octopus sighting. Phil is right ,the first time takes a little guts, but in reality my grandmother could do it and have a blast.

Shameless promotion for my buddy. Chuck and Robbie's dive shop, I've always wanted to go myself and would go with them. http://ambergriscayediving.com/

Disclaimer: I receive nothing from them for this suggestion.

We have done the night dive at Hol Chan and saw no less than 4 Octopi (sp). The black and orange ones. Just beautiful, but can you actually see them snorkling? We were at about 20-25 ft and seems they would be hard to see at that depth even with a really strong light. Wouldn't want to snorkel to close to the surface areas of the reef.

They are diffinitely night creatures.

We had an octopus give us quite a show while night snorkling Hol Chan with Amigos Del Mar a few years ago. He was scooting across the seafloor and even changed colors several times for us, trying to camoflage himself against the various coral. It was quite a treat!

They are real masters of disguise, much more so than the chameleon. Never seen one snorkelling though.

Octopi can breathe under water so it would be unusual to see them snorkeling.

Thanks everybody...hopefully, I can catch a good show while merely snorkeling, but I may get brave enough to dive, although my diving chops leave something to be desired since an ill-fated resort course almost turned horribly wrong smile But, a night snorkel sounds mighty interesting. Hurry up March...

Sirenia - don't let one bad experience put you off diving! There are several instructors here who are very understanding and patient who can show you that your experience was really untypical.

I had the unfortunate experience with going out on my first dive to Hol-Chan...with a very strong current and lousy equipment. Let's just say it's a good thing I am not scared of the water and remained calm...lol...anyway, I will totally try it again, but my mother may be disillusioned for life. I heard from someone on the island that Esmerelda (sp?) Reef is a good spot...any comments on that for a first-timer?

Mexico rocks is a great place to go. It is entirely inside the reef and you can just float over the coral and see everything. I took my 77 year old mother-in-law there as a first timer and she loved it.
