My opinion...Coconuts, hands down. Breakfast included, bicycles included, on the beach, very good management and staff, large clean rooms, and a popular beach bar.

I definitely fit the category of the budget traveler. I've stayed at Rubies in the $15 u.s. a night room facing the beach. It was clean and the shared bathroom was immaculate and felt very private with seperate enclosed lavatory stalls and an enclosed shower. We ate breakfast at the Rubies deli every morning for a couple of dollars. Best coffee we had on the whole trip and they open at 6 a.m. They have a deck at the back of the building with tables and chairs. You see a lot of locals eating there, so that's a good sign. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate luxury, but I spend my money frugally so I can go back more often.

I agree that Coconuts is by far the nicest of the three places you mention. But, while an excellent value, it is quite a bit more expensive, esp. compared with the non-A/C rooms at Rubie's. For the budget traveler in San Pedro, Rubie's is hard to beat.

I've done the bus thing from Cancun to Belize several times (3x last year) and its easy. Lots of english speakers. One tip though, make SURE you exchange more than enough dollars into pesos in Cancun. There is an exchange right there by the bus station. Make sure you have enough for the roundtrip also. I usually exchange $200 u.s. I got caught in Chetumal on my return trip after the exchange closed, about 60 pesos short and had to pay a randsom to get the giftshop to exchange money for me. What a racket they have going there. I think I got 6 pesos and the exchange was 9. Also, in Chetumal when you get on the Batty Brothers bus to Belize ask the attendant for a "double entry" and you will get to keep your tourist card and only pay 50 pesos (probably most of it is a bribe) and they stamp it, instead of giving your touirst card up at the border and having to get a new one coming back in which would require you to go and pay the $25 departure tax at the Banamex, and get the paper stamped. I hope this all makes sense to you. I had a detailed accounting of this on the travel page of the AC site.
