Are there squirrels on the Island?
6.30 yesterday morning, having my cup of coffee on the deck at Grand Caribe, and along comes a Squirrel on the beach. In 5 years and 40+ visits I have never seen a squirrel on the Island.
It looked and moved just like a regular grey squirrel that we see in New York parks all the time.
Marianne also saw a squrrel the previous day on the beach just nortb of Palapa

We asked around at BCs last night nobody could recall seeing a squirrel on the Island

So are there Squirrels on the Island?

Yes there are a few! I live at Tanmas, a little south of Grande Caribe. Yesterday my kitten was chasing one. Never had them here when I was growing up here in the late 50's. First time I ever saw one was about 10 years ago.

How did they get there? Maybe they floated in during a storm? I've not seen any there yet!

We have several grey squirrels in our area in Mata Grande. They have such fun in the palm trees and are a joy to watch.

I used to see grey squirrels at the Paradise Hotel back in the early '80's.

Recently we have been spotting some huge owls -don't know what type they are. They probably feed on squirrels.

I've seen several as well and live just north of Grand Caribe. Although cute they pose a major treat to nesting birds in the area. I've seen one raid a Kiskadee nest not long ago.

This is very good news for my hound dog! Squirrels are the only thing he misses from the states smile

Bubba chases one almost every morning , it goes from tree to tree along the property from the beach to the back and gives him his morning exercise while tuning his vocal cords.
Grey squirrels, probably been here forever.

I think it's really mean to call me a squirrel, Colin!

When Hilly Boo was 11 years old (1981)---we took him to Washington DC. for a few weeks. He had never been off Ambergris Caye before.First time he ever saw a squirrel in his life.He was fascinated by them.
