There is some kind of bug that once bitten, it creates a sort of weeping sore that doesn't seem to want to heal. Someone told me of a local remedy, but I can't remember what it was - vinegar?
anyone know? I have the darndest time with these bites getting infected..

Try a paste of salt (just enough water to hold the salt crystals)...has worked for me and I feel your pain. Just got back from SPO on Tuesday. The bugs seems to be very viscious, even with the heavy duty spray-must be all the rain. Good luck!

Rag girl has been using "AfterBite" which she purchased at Island Supermarket. Note: ammonia 3.5%. She says it is OK but wish she could find some thing to keep the bugs away in the first place.

Try Cutter Advanced (with the orange top) or products with picaridin. Walgreens and Target carry it. Avon has a few sprays and lotions that contain it. Not the regular Skin So Soft stuff. http://shop.avon.com/shop/product.aspx?pf_id=31314.
I'm always amazed at the people that are covered in bites and when I offer the Cutter they say "no thanks, I have deet sheets"...

Boardwidower, I'll bring an extra bottle for you. smile

The avon skin so soft works for me on the no-see-ums/ sand flys/ or whatever you call the tiny little bugs that seem to come out around dusk and leave the red spots with white rings around them (some may built up an immunity to the lingering spots, not the bites) The pesky mosquitoes need more. Outside of the strong bug spray, I actually tried a dryer sheet recently and it worked pretty well.

But do be careful, if a bite refuses to heal it could be becoming systemic, in which case it needs prompt action from a competent doctor if it is not to become much worse. I had this a couple of years ago, and only the fourth doctor I consulted (Dr. Lerida Rodriguez) knew what treatment was needed.

Of course, the best curative is to avoid being bitten in the first place. A good anti-bug lotion is called for.

I know I will catch some flack but here goes any way.... The thing that has worked best for me to keep the bugs away is a quick rub down with a fresh "Bounce" dryer sheet. For some reason the bugs are just not attracted to the scent left behind, but it is not nearly as offensive as some of the bug sprays (though the "cutter" products work well).

As for stopping the itch/burn of a bite: dip a cotton ball or q-tip in ammonia and dab the bite (same as "afterbite" active ingredient, just cheaper!).

For allergic reactions have LIQUID "Benadryl" in your kit. The liquid is much faster acting than the pills, caplets or melts. And if you are prone to allergic reactions check into having an epi pen.

btw, I live in a very mosquito and gnat infested area of Minnesota, have a daycare and HATE dealing with bug bites on kids. I used the same remedies when we went to San Pedro 3 times and to Jaguar Paw and Laminai.

It's great to be .....

You will find many bug threads on this board. Different things work for different people. Deep Woods Off works for me. As far as treatment is concerned, something with ammonia in it will probably relieve the discomfort. There is ammonia in urine if you are desperate. If the bites are badly inflamed, you are probably having an allergic reaction to the bug saliva. You might need medical attention if they don't get better on their own in a day or so, or if they are getting worse. Stay away from the beach at dawn and dusk to avoid more bites.

I have posted this before and swear by the results...

Vitamin B1.....thiamine.....

This vitamin gives off an odor when you perspire that is unattractive to insects but undetectable to humans....

It is also known as the Happy Vitamin....

Try it.....
