This article documents that local tour operators and tour giudes sometimes only make 10% of what the cruise ships charge for a shore excursion. Nobody is going to get rich off this.
That was a KEY issue back in 94 at the cruise ship symposium. That and any tour guide that did excell in an area can often be enticed by the cruise ship to join with them on the boat and the area then loses not only the revenue but all the expertice and special talents of the individual. Perhaps good short term for that individual but a detriment to local offerings. Even the "big" local operations lose then because they can no longer offer the best local guides and personell to their clients.
