Hi I am planning on going to Belize in april and researching places to stay. I want to stay in San pedro/Ambergis Caye, however I have some concerns. How often do the boats go from the island to the inlands? I want to do activities such going to the ruins, caves etc but afraid that we may not get back to the last boat in time and will be stuck in the city.

Is this a valid concern or do the boats leave late enough that I can enjoy all that without worry. What if I want to have dinner in belize city would it be possible to do that and get back to my hotel? Another question is how often do the boats run?

Oh if anyone has recommendations for hotels please let me know.

Thanks

There are outfits that run the inland tours from the islands. May cost a little more than taking the water taxi and then the bus but you don't waste as much time and will get back on time.

Why would you want to go eat in Belize City? There are more than enough good restaurants on the island.

Lunch in Belize City would be more workable than dinner unless you plan to stay overnight.

I cannot think of a single restaurant in Belize City that competes with the luscious food served in host of great spots in San Pedro - the idea of dining out in Belize City is something to leave off your trip agenda!

Unless something has changed, the Smokey Mermaid on Cork street, accross from the Radison is worth going to.

Besides that, you will be very happy with all the great food on AC. You can get to almost everything you want to do. Be careful and don't over do. Take time to relax and enjoy the beauty that will surround you.

Thanks Boostted smile

I have always heard good things about the Riverside tavern but never eaten there although knowing they serve Gallon Jug Beef makes me pretty sure I would like it cause it is so tasty.

I like Belize City. I go there often and love to go with a group of friends overnight. There are some excellent hotels such as The Great House and some great places to eat. There is also the culture centre and art galleries. Tacogirl is very correct in recommending Riverside Tavern, which really does have delicious food (especially the burgers). I am particularly fond of Tinto y Blanco, a great wine bar that also serves imported meats and cheeses. There are plenty of wonderful local restaurants - two of my favourites are El Centro and Bird Isle. So, if you do find yourself staying in Belize City for the night, don't worry. That said, as a tourist, there aren't too many things that would attract me to Belize City (although the museum is lovely). If you want to be on the mainland and close to many tours and activities, San Ignacio is perfect. When I was a tourist I fell in love with San Pedro and eventually chose to make it my home, so I am naturally biased.

One of my personal favorites in Belize City is "La Tavernatta". $5 and you get two huge scoops of gelato after a nice tasty meal.

And for mainland tours if interested I recommend these guys (see link) http://www.belizecomputerguy.com/job4.html

not just because I've done work for them but because he not only owns the business but also runs the business and is the one taking you on the tour. He is very informative and I can personally gurantee you'll have a blast.

Three best restaurants in Belize City, in my opinion, are Riverside Tavern, Sumathi, ( moved to Eve St) and Chon Saan ( they now have a new dim sum menu). I like Bird Isle for the view of the harbor but not the fried food.
If you stay overnight, the Radisson and other hotels are fine but for something a bit different, try Villa Boscardi in the Buttonwood Bay area, right behind the PM's house.

I love Neiris's for good Belizean food and great prices. 2 locations - one on Freetown Rd and one on Queen St. Don't be scared of Belize City. Just use your head and stay in the populated areas, take taxis to your destinations, ask at the local hotels for recommendations/advice. The bar at the Radisson is always a fun time, in some unusual way. I have had GREAT times in Bz City! Love the feeling of the evening air there - it's sultry....different from the cayes or futher inland.
