When we were in Bonaire last year, they had a map of the island that showed snorkle and/or dive spots across the island. Does Caye Caulker have anything similar? I've written a few suggestions down that were posted here (greatly appreciated).

You really cant get to any of the snorkeling areas on your own. They are not accessible by swimming from shore and it is dangerous to attempt since there is a lot of boat traffic. You should plan on going with a licensed tour guide.

probably even a law against going with out!

the answer to the question, however, is YES. I don't know of a dive shop that does not have a map of the island with the named dive sites marked. In fact Belize diving Adventures even painted it on the floor of the dive boat.

There is also a book with all the diving and snorkling sites in the country. Its put out by one of the guide books. My copy is in Belize and I'm not. It tells alot about each dive site such as what kind of dive is it and what you should look for at each site. Think the title was Diving and Snorkling sites in Belize.

I have that book. Most of it is many years out of date. The reef hasn't changed that much but operators certainly have.

They just asked for a map of dive spots, the book we are referencing does show the dive sites. It doesn't say much about dive operators or guides. Obviously, when you don't know a place very well you would likely seek a qualified guide. But that wasn't the question.

There is a detailed map of Caye Caulker that also shows the reef and snorkeling sites. You can buy it at most gift shops.
Everyone snorkels for fun for free at the split and around. There is three sink holes to the back that you can snorkel over. You can cross the split and snorkel the mangroves. Rent snorkeling gear or bring your own and snorkel around docks. Lots of tropical fish like to use the shade. We made a small artificial reef under our dock. Octopus, lobster, shrimp and juvenile fish hide in the old cement bricks, that are now encrusted in different corals growing. Eagle rays and sting rays visit at night looking for food.
