I'm plagued by lots of pop up on my computer and can't figure out how to get rid of them. Bubbles for:
your printer is low on ink!
install updates now?
you might be at risk from not renewing your this and that...
your updates are ready!
your granny's shorts need changing!
How do i get rid of these annoying pop ups???

Pop-up blocker turned on? Might seem like a silly question, but............

You can change your windows update to never check for updates but then you will have to check manually on a regular basis. Can't do much about the low ink. Basically those are all there to warn you that you're not taking care of your computer.

Ahh...I took his comment to mean he's getting non-system junk ads - like from spy/malware

Those are Windows notifications in the Taskbar.

Can't answer the pop up blocker for Firefox but in IE you go into Tools/Internet Options/Privacy and turn on the pop up blocker. For non-windows/browser pop ups.
