New call center to provide more jobs during hard times

Kathy Esquivel

Kathy Esquivel

The unemployment figure stood at twelve point five percent for the third quarter of 2009, that’s according to the Statistical Institute of Belize. The opening of a new business venture may not dent the statistics, but in these hard times, it will provide sixty jobs for residents of Belize City. It won’t come on-stream until April, but with Clear Call Belize Limited, it is expected that many will be lining up for jobs. The directors of the company are Crios Munnings, Ruth and Kathy Esquivel. And according to Kathy, it’s a joint venture partnership with Market Links, a U.S. based company that has established call centers throughout the Caribbean.

Kathy Esquivel, Director, Clear Call Belize Limited

“We’ve been working with Market Links in the U.S. that has a wide experience. They have call centers in Florida, Jamaica, and Dominican Republic. We finally got it to a point where we hope to open early April in Belize City.”

Jose Sanchez

“How many jobs?”

Kathy Esquivel

“We’re looking at thirty seats with two shifts. So we’re talking about sixty jobs.”

Jose Sanchez

“Do you see this as a market that can grow within the country?”

Kathy Esquivel

“Definitely; there is a market for it. It’s providing employment opportunities for people essentially high school graduates who might or might not have experience. And so even if they don’t stay within it, it gives them a good first employment opportunity from which they can go on. But many people stay with it.”

Jose Sanchez

“The type of services that they will speak to, what are they?”

Kathy Esquivel

“The clients we’re looking at currently are U.S. universities. So the calls would be to prospective students in the U.S. that universities want to attract and following up on that giving detailed advising people who are interested in courses available and how they can enroll. So our primary clients would be U.S. universities.”

Jose Sanchez

“It’s a high school level job, what kind of salary?”

Kathy Esquivel

“Well, the salary will be the usual salary for those entry type levels but it will not be below normal. We hope to pitch it a little above normal. And there’s opportunity to progress and to move up the scale.”

Esquivel says that the company is looking for people who have voices pleasant to the ear and have a good command of the English language.

Open up VOIP and there would be a lot more jobs to follow suit.

Was just thinking the same thing. I could actually hire one or two employees myself in Belize if they could make this long distance phone issue a thing of the past.

Canam, what is this "VOIP" you speak of.

Thanks,

Voice Over Internet Protocol, or internet phones. Skype and Vonage are two of the best known. The monopoly provider of internet services here also provides most of the telephone services, and decided they didn't want the competition for their very highly-priced telephone services. So, having the means readily at their disposal, they blocked any VoIP traffic. Illegal, but what the heck!

VoIP is widely used the world over as a cheap means of international communication. Even "regular" phone companies use it as part of their network. But Belize doesn't want to be part of the internet revolution - or at any rate certain people don't want Belize to be able to.

I am surprised there are call centers here. They are , of course widespread in the Philippines and India. I guess there is that legacy of the British here too, so it makes sense. Guess this one shut down though - what happened?

Here is a company that may be interested in coming to Belize:

APAC Customer Services, Inc. is a leading provider of quality customer interaction solutions for market leaders in retail and business services, communications, healthcare, insurance and financial services, media & entertainment, and travel industries. Our approach is to collaborate with our clients in order to deliver custom solutions and improve bottom line performance.

APAC Offshore:

APAC operates three customer contact centers in greater Manila, and a fourth in the Province of Leyte.

VoIP - Voice Over Internet Protocol APAC’s VoIP solution enables the management of millions of interactions of varying media each year. Our approach allows for efficient distribution of voice calls, emails, and web interactions, blending these contacts at the agent desktop for a unified customer experience regardless of the channel.

But if VOIP technology is being blocked, they may not be interested.

VoIP call loading and balanced routing add extra efficiencies in operations enabling intelligent call routing across our global network, consolidating reports, and enhancing customer service. This functionality allows APAC to meet peak processing or unexpected increase in call volume, as well as extended our disaster recovery and business continuity capabilities.

Call centers in Belize are a great idea. I recently had to call for service on my cell phone and the call center was in Jamaica. I could understand the people, no problem. Since Belize is an English-speaking country, having call centers there would be ideal.
