Two million dollars donated to Belize for world class children’s clinic
Ground will soon be broken for a medical facility that will cater primarily to children. It’s a momentous endeavor and will bring relief to parents who are forced to take their children out of the country for life saving surgeries. Sanford World Clinics and Belize Healthcare Partners have teamed up to build the Sanford Children’s Clinic in Belize City. Today it was announced that Belize Healthcare Charitable Trust (BHCT) has donated two million dollars for the construction of the facility. Philip Osborne, on behalf of BHCT commented, “We are happy to partner with Sanford World Clinics and Belize Healthcare Partners to ensure the construction and operation of a facility that will provide world class medical treatment for Belize’s children, reducing the need for them to be flown abroad, while at the same time providing valuable training and experience for Belize’s own medical personnel in the field of pediatrics.” News Five spoke to Doctor Wendy Rios, HealthCare Partner’s pediatrician, who is excited that the groundbreaking will soon commence.

“The Charitable Trust is going to donate to us two million dollars and the Belize Healthcare Partners gave us the piece of land. Basically the clinic brings some pediatricians and sub- specialists from the U.S., meaning nephrologists, endocrinologists, oncologists, and they are going to give us… they bring everything to do all the tests if we need more specialists because here in Belize we are limited only to the pediatric area. But if we need some—if some kid has leukemia or something we have to send the kid to Guatemala or Merida. The idea to bring these people here is that the kid stays here in Belize and we provide all the medication, all the chemotherapy that the kid needs. Or if it’s a surgery, if it’s possible to do it here in Belize, or the kid can travel to the US to the Sanford Hospital.”
“What about cases for the region? Can people then be able to come to Belize and bring their children?
Dr. Wendy Rios
“Yes, this is the idea to have everything in Belize that the people don’t need to go to another country to have the doctors and everything. The idea is to have everything right here.”
“How soon will the clinic be built?”
Dr. Wendy Rios
“They said as soon as possible, in February, this month they start to do the clinic. They put the first rock right here in the land. We want to have pediatric cardiologists basically because this is very important and it’s very delicate, they need a good ICU because it’s not only the surgery, the follow up is important also. But we want that all these kinds of things have to be available here in Belize.”
The new clinic will provide pediatric care and be designed in a castle theme similar to other Sanford Children’s facilities. The facility which will be located on the Healthcare Partners compound is expected to be open in 2011. It will be the second Sanford Children’s World Clinic announced by Sanford Health as part of initiatives outlined after a four hundred million U.S. dollar donation from Denny Sanford in 2007.
