SPRCS Cafeteria a reality

After months of constant work and tireless determination, the San Pedro Roman Catholic School finally opened the doors to its cafeteria on Monday, February 15th. Eve Dirnback, Calendar Girl, assisted in the construction of the school's library and realized that there was much need for a cafeteria. "You can see the children walking home under the blazing sun to get a meal. This walk will take them half an hour one way and another half an hour on the way back. Other kids remain on the grounds and consume unhealthy lunches and we know that nutrition is essential for growing brains," she explained. Because of this, Eve, along with Katy Eggert decided to take it upon themselves and carry the project forward.

Initial investment was received from the San Pedro Social Club towards the building of the facility. The existing shell of the proposed cafeteria had to be torn down and built from the ground up, which took up the donation received. Through fundraising efforts, and with the help of volunteers and Mr. Dirnback, the cafeteria was made a reality.

The cafeteria is fully equipped with a stove, refrigerator, freezer, coffee maker (for the faculty) and picnic tables for seating. Samantha, an Infant II student at the institution, was extremely pleased that the cafeteria had opened. Beaming with joy, she expressed the thrill of not having to walk all the way home every day for lunch.

At low prices ($1 for some meals), students and teachers can now receive healthy, freshly prepared breakfast and lunches. Parents can even join their children for lunch at one of the picnic tables made available by the cafeteria.

Having fallen in love with the children of the school, Eve continues in her quest to continue helping the students. The next project is to build a palapa in the school yard (20x30) equipped with tables and seating. Once the palapa has been erected, the students can find refuge from the rain and extreme heat.

A ribbon cutting ceremony for the cafeteria will be held shortly.
