super-duper! there will be no power the entire day of my arrival. but if we're realllly lucky, we may get some cheese or water tho.

we say, oh well, ya gotta love it - its not our first power outage nor water shortage there. good thing we're not newbies and just roll with whatever belize brings us (or doesn't, in this case). but can you imagine how this must look to first time visitors?

Sweetjane - I don't see anyplace that is out for a whole day - or is it too early for my tired eyes to read?

Advice to all who can afford it - buy a generator (especially resorts) for a host or reasons. It's something that people everywhere need to think about (east coast US/ice storms are a example of life threatening conditions due to lack of power). As we depend more and more on technology, we are more and more vulnerable (and disabled and unhappy) when that technology flutters for even an hour.

It's not just about BEL, it's not just the Mexican grid, it's not just hurricanes ------ it's about being prepared for life's curve balls - of which there seem to be more not less over time.

poetic license? no? sorry, ok, downright exaggerating due to giddiness of impending arrival...its not all day only 4 hours. i get up predawn, so 8-noon in my world IS all day! and continuing in my facetious vein, (or not) when they say its over at noon, is it really over by noon?

it does so often seem things are counterproductive to the population, leaving it to the individual to cover himself for, well, everything. obviously, up here, without power for 4 hours, business would come to a halt. someone else once said to me that moving to belize sure did teach her patience. smile

BEL is a peace of crab. How can you plan you daily life when they just postpone the power outage to Thursday and Friday without any notice.

Why is it so hart to maintain this simple power grid stable?
With all the generators BEL has in San Pedro we should not have any outages at all and the planned outage should be on a minimum level.

Am i wrong?

They do what they want, my next house will have plenty of solar panels on the roof. With this high power prices you can have a ROI in 5 to 7 years.

IMHO (for those who can't re-jig for solar or whatever)....... get a generator.......
Our neighbors have a little one that is the size of a carry-on suitcase. It's portable. It keeps the beer cold and/or the computer up and running (whichever you prefer - or maybe both) when needed.

BEL Notice to Customers: Intermittent Power Outages

Belize Electricity Limited advises that there have been several intermittent power outages, especially affecting customers living in rural areas prone to bush fires over the past four weeks.

These unplanned power outages have been primarily caused by burnt utility poles due to wildfires and the accumulation of high soot and dust contamination of equipment. When the soot and dust become dampened by light rain or dew, it results in short interruptions.

Customers are advised that, with the onset of the rainy season, isolated areas especially in the islands and near the coast may also experience short interruptions due to similar issues with salt and dust contamination.

BEL thanks the many customers who have been reporting on fires that have been affecting the power lines. Customers can call 0-800-BEL-CARE or 0-800-235-2273 to report a problem, or to get updated information on problems in their area.

Information on power outages is also available online at www.bel.com.bz and via our toll free line.

BEL should begin to schedule these things on non-business days and perhaps very early in the AM so that the inconvenience is minimized.

I suggest that an outage from 5 am - 9 am on a Sunday would probably be the least problematic for all.

But for many that is the time that they sleep and it is difficult if not impossible to sleep in the middle of summer without a fan. So if the fan goes out there goes the sleep. Certainly a power outage during daylight hours is preferable - and of course we all have times of the day that it would be most inconvenient or convenient. The power company seems to be diligent in getting notices out to warn people ahead of time and that is probably about the best they can do.

The reason the power is cut off is because the power company is maintaining existing equipment or installing new equipment - so come on people - if power is vital to your survival get a generator.

As of the 6:30 am LOVE FM interview with BEL officials - the BEL men worked until 3 am today to try to locate the cause of the problem. They did not find it. They went back to work at dawn today and as of 6:30 am had not yet found the cause.

The parts of San Pedro that were shut down and then powered back up --- Tres Cocos etc - they all have power from the town's back-up emergency generators, not from the grid.

BEL Investigates Cause of Extended Loss of Power Supply to Portions of San Pedro Town

Yesterday, November 13, Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) commenced works in San Pedro Town during a planned power outage scheduled for 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to install and commission new equipment, conduct general maintenance and replace infrastructure on the transmission and distribution system on the island.

This planned power outage was slated to affect the portion of San Pedro Town which includes Coconut Drive, Angel Coral Street, Sea Grape Street, Pescador Drive, San Telmo Area, Manta Ray Street, Mosquito Street and the entire area North of Boca del Rio.

During the course of these works, technical problems were experienced by crews working on an underground system on the island and on the submarine cable between the Maskall and San Pedro Substations. This prevented restoration of power supply to the affected areas at 2:00 p.m., as scheduled.

BEL line crews continued work to rectify the problems, however, there were several failed attempts to reconnect these areas to the main line which links San Pedro to the mainland via a submarine cable. Since the remainder of the island was being supplied by BEL's diesel generators, the increase in load later in the evening placed a strain on the generation requirements. This limited generation capacity required that another area be taken off the generation supply, which resulted in a power outage to an additional area – Barrier Reef Drive. That area was eventually restored with power after approximately 2 and half hours.

BEL crews continued to work into the night with the aim of identifying the cause of the technical problems which are preventing restoration of power supply to the remainder of the island. Crews were forced to suspend works at 3:00 a.m. this morning and have since returned to the field to continue their investigation.

Areas currently affected are Journey's End onwards North and between BEL's substation and Island Cottage Resort.

BEL apologizes to customers in San Pedro Town for this extended power outage and the great inconvenience it has caused. The Company will continue to work to restore power supply to the affected areas in San Pedro Town and will provide another update as soon as possible.
