I frequent the www.xcalak.tv discussion forum--and someone had just taken a few aerial photos from a tower that had been erected. Gives you a good idea of the size of the little village and its surroundings. Also, you might get a kick just out of reading through the discussion forum--a very, very laid back place, and pretty cool.
There are about 250 people at any one time.................but you probably only see about 25 around town. I have lived here about 12 years between travels. Real Estate is very cheap as well by comparison......$249,000.00 Beach front House
For those who like Ambergris Caye and San Pedro, visiting there is a very surreal experience in some ways. Same water, same reef, the villagers in some ways remind you of the old-timers in San Pedro. But it's much more quiet. FYI, one morning I went swimming out to the reef. Think I can do that from my hotel in San Pedro?
I know Xcalak not well at all compared to A.C., but some of the things I've read on the forum that ought to tell you how "out of the way" this place is:
--The couple of local restaurants advertise their specials on the forum, and do call-in orders over radio
--Expats on the forum put out notices to see if anyone is going to Chetumal (a few hours away) so they can give the person their ATM card to make an ATM run.
