I've just been informed by Flor at Wine de Vine that there is a complete embargo on imported dairy products for all importers and stores. This includes all cheeses, box milk, yoghurt, etc.

They are putting together more info at this moment and when I have more information I will post it.

Flor has also started a petition at Wine de Vine in protest of the action, please stop by as soon as possible to sign the form.

Simon...

This is just getting retarded.

Seriously.

I mean look at the current threads on this board... increases in taxes (which trust our customers have already noticed), failures of basic services (water for example), destruction of the environment, crime, etc, etc... You'd be hard pressed to come up with a recipe that would make it MORE difficult for tourism to flourish.

It's truly tempting to just say the hell with it. Call it a day.

Heck, I can sleep in, go fishing for a bit, cook myself and my wife some dinner and read a book and come out more AHEAD at this rate than I can trying to run a business here.

yeah ....it's looking pretty bleak at this point. I hesitate to refer clients to this site for fear of what they will find out! I try to be very honest with my clients but it is getting increasingly harder to do that and try to close sales and stay in business! Sad but true.

This happens every year with some food or another and then vendors freak out and the ban is pulled and the item is back in the store. Why do they even start with such nonsense.

Stupid is as stupid does. Not sure that "stupid" is reserved for Belize. Having lived for 22 years in California I have seen more self-inflicted crises invoked by government than I care to comment on.

Oh yea ---- my favorite here - remember when they were banning "table eggs" from out of country. I thought they were chicken eggs, but hey - and how the heck can you tell a Guatemalan chicken from a Belizean one.

What gets me is something that was real popuar like Dr. Pepper. The distributer, Karl Menzies was put out of his long time business with the stroke of the pen. I guess it was taking too much market share of some other soft drink distributor.

Barbara K is right. The effect on tourism (across Belize) is damaging even if as may happen this senseless ban is lifted. Its not just the ban, its the instability caused by the possibility of such a random action being taken by some government official sitting in his ivory tower, going home to his Chicken rice and Beans each night (or maybe just for a change, it will be stew beans rice and baked chicken....)
What's next, wine?

If so, it is not official. Dr DePaz issues the permit for importation and he doesn't know anything about this. I spoke with the head of one of the largest supermarkets and she doesn't know anything about it. The only reason govt would do something like this would be in a situation similiar to the made cow disease scare, to protect a producer here or if foreign exchange is low, which it is. Fondue on.

Katie, give Wine de Vine a call and they can tell you what they were told by the government and what they were told when they talked to other importers of dairy products. Their number is 226-3430.
