I've just been told that today Coastal Express takes over Island Ferry, so there will again be a monopoly service on-island just as there is off-island. I wonder what will happen to fares and the service?
CoastalXpress is taking on the ACER responsibilities and will be honoring all Island Ferry passes through May 8th, 2010. follow us @CoastalXpress http://twitter.com/CoastalXpress
Just to correct a misconception: Coastal express did not buy Island Ferry. Island Ferry went out of business. We did buy most of their boats however, since we need boats.
Can anyone confirm for us that Coastal Express is still the only game in town leaving from Amigos del Mar? Also, what are they charging these days? Their website doesn't say.

Say it 5-times fast: "I buy my BBQ and Belikins on the beach at BCs!"
They're still leaving from the Amigos del Mar dock and they are running approximately every hour heading north. I think they're charging about $10 usd. but its been a while since I last used it.
Their rates are like every other transportation fee, the farther you go the more it cost. $5.usd from town to Grande Carrib.-then $6.,then $7. and so on, to Mata Chica its $10.us. You get a dollar discount for a r/t ticket. Coastal is a first class operation and hardly comparable to island ferry.
We are arriving on the 18th for a week at Costa Maya, does Coastal Express still offer the week pass as they did last year? We still have my old ticket stuck on the refrig to remind us of the great trips we had running back and forth with Coastal.
