The rain is great for the cisterns, the plants, the birds, cleaning off the power lines and getting rid of the dust. Sure there are some reasons why the rain is also a bummer - mud, inconvenience going to school and work, sad tourists .
But, I am not tired of it yet. Don't you remember how unbelievably hot it was recently? This is a short respite from the heat to come....
Anyway, good day for ducks and frogs.
My little boy decided to see if the puddle was deep enough to go over his shoes - so he will spend the day at school with wet feet. What a silly billy.
6.51" last time I saw something like this was in May of 2001 when they had something like 2' of rain in 4 days. Boats were sunk all along the coast from bilge pumps that couldn't keep up.
The guys who have boats out front of my place are coming out to bail but I can see one boat that is not well tended to and is starting to list heavily.
I think we had something like this either 1.5 or 2.5 years ago - can't remember which. I had ground water inside my house then, and Pedro's bar was semi-permanently flooded.
I think last time we had this kind of rain was in 2008 - it was TD 16. The mainland had a horrific flood issue. Let's pray they are ok with this one.
And for the rest of us statistic/weather freaks, how many inches and hour have we been getting - somebody said it was a record and I truly believe it.
About an hour ago I gave up on the bilge and pulled my boat into 2 inches of water by the shore. Having your boat sink id dreadful. There is a lull in the rain right now - go out there an pull in the boats folks!
This message is for those of you who are not on the island right now. It's a little update on an amazing day of rain.
If you have a cistern it is probably full. If it's not, have somebody check the condition of your downspouts, because you should be filling up rapidly.
Last time I checked we'd had 10.5 inches of rain in the past 24 hours - and 9 of those inches fell in about 4 hours.
Boats are sinking. Roads up our way are under water. The frogs are already making frog noises in the back yard. If I had an underwater camera I'd take photos. When there is a break in the weather I'll give a try and send a visual along for reference.
James - Yikes - is there no overflow for the cistern? Check - there should be one ...... You can try to put a big hose in the cistern and drain it out ..... good luck !
Today mother nature decided to just bless us with rain... too much rain! Well it poured heavily for approximately two hours, flooding different parts of the island. Fishermen from the island had a bit more work cut out for them since their boats were sinking. Also, our office received reports of a boat filled with tourists out on a dive sinking outside the reef just in front of town. Local dive shops rushed to assist. No injuries or casualties have been reported. I guess its true when they say that when it rain it pours.
The downpour has been almost non-stop all morning, and around 12:30pm, these pictures were taken from Heritage Bank on Barrier Reef Drive. Water was seen rising up the steps, and golf carts and vehicles splashed water every which way as they tried to navigate the flooded streets.
The forecast calls for "Gradual improvement in weather conditions on the way." Thursday's forecast:"A few showers or thunderstorms." and Friday "Isolated showers/thunderstorms" Winds are expected to go from 20knots to 15knots for the next two days.
*Operators of small Craft should exercise caution*
Thanks for all of the weather updates for those of us who aren't there but wish we were! San Pedro is always in my heart & on my mind.Hope everyone is OK!

South Ambergris Caye Neighborhood Watch (SACNW) posted this tip on FB. (Am sure many of you are already familiar with this, but thought I'd share it anyway!)
Attention! If you have standing water in and around your property pour a little (depending on the size of the puddle 1/2 cup to a cup) vegetable oil on it. It will create a film on top of the water and stop the mosquito larva from being able to breathe and they will die. You can find inexpensive oil in some of the supermarkets in town. This will break the cycle.

That's true, but I can only fill the holes in my property, fix some parts of the road in front of my yard and put some oil in a few potholes on the road in my neighborhood.
But this still not solve the problem...
If it is a health issue (Dengue) then the government should take some action and not only care about there buddy's and the reelection.
We had this discussion already in the Mosquito Control Efforts. And I got critics to put cooking oil in the potholes.
Is there a final number on how much it has rained this week? We just got back from Tranquility Bay late Wednesday night and the suitcases are still damp LOL.
