The Great Blue Hole is a large underwater sinkhole off the coast of Belize. It lies near the center of Lighthouse Reef, a small atoll 100 kilometres (62 mi) from the mainland and Belize City. The hole is circular in shape, over 300 metres (984 ft) across and 125 metres (410 ft) deep.[1] It was formed as a limestone cave system during the last glacial period when sea levels were much lower. As the ocean began to rise again, the caves flooded, and the roof collapsed.[2] Believed to be the world’s largest feature of its kind, the Great Blue Hole is part of the larger Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System, a World Heritage Site of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).[1]
Exploration
This site was made famous by Jacques-Yves Cousteau who declared it one of the top ten scuba diving sites in the world. In 1971, he brought his ship, the Calypso, to the hole to chart its depths.[3] Investigations by this expedition confirmed the hole's origin as typical karst limestone formations, formed before rises in sea level in at least four stages, leaving ledges at depths of 21, 49 and 91 meters (69, 161 and 299 ft). Stalactites were retrieved from submerged caves, confirming their previous formation above sea level. Some of these stalactites were also off-vertical by 10°-13° in a consistent orientation, thus indicating that there had also been some past geological shift and tilting of the underlying plateau, followed by a long period in the current plane.
Tourism
This is a popular spot amongst recreational scuba divers, who are lured by the opportunity to dive in crystal clear water and meet several species of fish, including giant groupers, nurse sharks and several types of reef sharks such as the Caribbean reef shark and the Blacktip shark. Other species of sharks, like the bull shark and hammerheads, have been reported there, but are not regular sightings. Usually, dive trips to the Great Blue Hole are full-day trips, which include one dive in the Blue Hole and two further dives in nearby reefs.
On-shore caves of similar formation, as large collapsed sinkholes, are well known in Belize,[4] and in the Yucatan Peninsula, where they are known as "cenotes".

i sure think so. also snorkeling the rim is unbelievable.

You may be surprised at the number of divers who have not dived it but still say its not worth the effort.

That is exactly why I wrote the article above to explain why the majority of divers on the diver forums say its not worth diving when the reality is very different.

People have to make lots of decisions on how to spend their money and their time. By definition those decisions are made without having experienced the "attraction" in question. They consider the facts available to them, including listening to others who have had the experience and deciding how much weight to give to their opinions, then make their own. Quite a few people go through that process with the Blue Hole and come to their decisions.

In my experience quite a few people, probably the majority, who dive the Blue Hole say afterwards that it wasn't really worth it for them. That isn't to say they didn't enjoy it, but that armed with the knowledge they now have they wouldn't have done it. So when someone else asks them if they should dive it they will often get the recommendation "no".

To say blandly that the Blue Hole is "worth diving" is unhelpful.

This only relates to the Blue Hole if you have your country in "Bing" set to the USA. If you have it set to another country you'll see something completely different. My country was set by system default (not by me - I've never visited the site) to UK and all I saw was about Dunkirk.

Yes Elbert, with my Bing region set to UK I saw nothing relating to the BH at all. I saw a composite photograph intending to represent the Dunkirk evacuation. It had its own "hotspots" (hyperlinks).

I haven't tried all region settings in Bing, just those two, so I can't speak for what Gaz saw. I didn't set my Bing region and I don't know why it set it for me as UK - the only setting on my computer relating to the UK is my language setting. My Windows region is set to Belize. Bing doesn't have a Belize region, which is why I guessed at USA. You may be able to emulate what i saw by temporarily changing your Bing setting to UK and then exiting and restarting the program. What is your Windows region?

Yes, the Blue hole is a fantastic dive. I've done it a number of times but the trip I remember most was made on Ray Bowers also fantastic "Reef Rammer".........uh that is "reef Roamer" Actually on that trip we rammed the reef and Ray had to jack the transmission back into place and we were off again in a couple hours. I could write a chapter about that trip but that's forlater...

well.......I'll regret this I'm sure but as with most things on the Reef Roamer the supplyof food for the overnight guests ran low and Ray asked me to find some grub during a scuba dive. I found a huge lobster and didn't have much trouble pulling it out of it's hiding place in the rocks. Now mind you all I had was my bare hands since we were scuba diving and you can't use spears but when I turned to head back to the boat I noticed I had a few of the other guests watching me. I turned my back to them and slowly twisted the head off and stuck the tail in my bc and dropped the head. There were mixed emotions when they served the lobster for the evening meal.

Ahhhh the good ol days

Many a story could be told of those days out at Lighthouse reef I have fond lifelong memories of camping on Half Moon caye no other boats in sight except us the Manta IV and the Reef Roamer II

We would on occasion see another boat on the dive sites

We used to take the caretaker and his dog a few supplies as it was not often he saw a boat pull up to Half Moon except the Manta IV and the Reef Roamer and was happy to get whatever he could especially a cold coke and the dog always appreciated our leftover chicken and pork bones from our BBQ

Those were the days

I have done many dives at the Blue Hole; two are especially memorable.
Two friends of mine who had not been certified for long made the trek out with Billy Leslie and a group on Bill Toonin’s boat. When we came down from ‘inside’, swam out and supposedly up J. saw some sharks down below and decided to go pet them. Her husband caught her at about 200 feet and brought her up. Narced? Of course. She said “they were so pretty.”

Another trip one of my regular dive buddies, an instructor from California, brought a newly certified friend with him. The newbie was a natural so we felt confident taking him with us by having him follow me and the instructor behind him.

On the way out I like to talk to divers who have never done type of dive and find that many of them are nervous and ashamed to ask questions so we get some chit chat going. We talk about being narced and what it is like and what to do. After the dive I ask “who besides me got narced?” Glances exchanged but no dialog so I told my experience this time. I heard the most beautiful voice sounding far away calling my name in the most enticing manner; over and over. I knew that I was narced and just enjoyed it. Then my dive instructor friend said that one time when he looked at his computer the numbers were scrolling like a slot machine in Vegas. Then the newbie said at one point it was like when you wake up in a strange place and say “Where am I?” Then other said they had the same sensation and we all had some good laughs.

One of the benefits of diving is the pictures in you mind and the opportunities to revisit over and over by telling about it. Kinda like fish stories but we don’t exaggerate – much.
