Just recently, I've seen some posts that mention Mitch's affect on the reef. Is it that damaged? Looking forward to some diving when I go in June. Also, anybody out there have any experience witht the diving at Lighthouse? Was there damage there also? No matter what, I know it will be beautiful. Just curious.

I was there before Mitch (got evacuated) then again Jan. 2000 and Jan. 2001. Around A/C you cannot see that any damage was done. However, we were told that the wall on the north half of Turneffe is stripped bare. We dove the south half this year and it was as pretty as in the past trips. I was told that Lighthouse had no damage. We dove Half Moon and it was beautiful.

We just returned from Belize the 16th and had a great time. It was windy so the boat ride was rough (part of the experience). We went to Lighthouse reef and all three dives (Blue Hole, Aquarium, and Half Moon Caye). Blue Hole the coral is dead and is a fast dive b/c you go 130 feet. It was cool b/c we saw 10 Caribbean reef sharks so it was worth it. The other 2 dives were excellent. We saw a lot of life and the coral was beautiful. Go ahead and do it if your there.

Scubaldy, my buddy and I had an aborte trip to the Blue Hole due to a blow motor and ended up diving Turneffe. My buddy cried.

Thanks, everyone! I was in AC a little before Mitch for a very short stay and only got 1 dive in but it was off the closer reef. I wanted to venture out this time since I have 9 days. Thanks SO much!

Lighthouse Reef is undoubtedly some of the very best diving in the caribbean, on a perfect day with the sun high in the sky it is absolutely AWESOME especially the sites along Long caye Wall. Damage from Mitch was minimal due to the fact that it came from the west and while Turneffe on the west side got real bashed up the pristine sites were spared. The diving will be excellent have a great time. Dive Safe Gaz Cooper www.divebelize.com

Sorry, sometimes this computer has a mind of it's own. I go to get some water and come back to find "SeaShell" oops. Tell your buddy not to cry. Many of us who go to Belize to dive would not bother with the Blue Hole even if it was free.

Why? Wel, have you ever heard of anyone doing it more than once? The walls on the other sites are awesome. One of the guys on my last trip said he had actually dove the hole from a live aboard. The best stuff is in the top 30' around the edge.

LOL, sorry Scubaldy. My friend was not crying about missing the Blue Hole (though she did b*tch about that later). She welled-up to see Turneffe so thrashed from Keith. She has been diving there many, many times and it hurt her to see its condition. Sorry I wasn't more clear. That said, I've been in the Blue Hole a couple of times and I think it's great. I wouldn't make the trip just to do the Hole, but the next two dives and the lunch and a beliken or two or some panty-rippers on the trip back to SP, all make for one heck of a great way to spend a day.
