After a pretty lacklustre display by England (no change there then) the 1-0 win by Slovenia does at least give Englands fans some hope. My initial feeling was to volunteer to light the funeral pyre for our goalkeeper, but on reflection, everyone has a bad day. His career would be finished if he was dropped now. he is a professional and a good goal keeper. he will get over it and come back all the stronger (I hope) I wish Crouch had come on earlier to give us a bit more height but other than that Capello's selection looked Ok. Can we qualify? Most certainly butnothing less than a win against Algeria is now needed.
Yes WT, Germany has looked easily the best side so far, despite a surprisingly inept (and most un-Australian) performance. Trouble is us English are all now getting that familiar sinking feeling. We qualify in second place and in the round of 16 we meet.....Germany. the score is 0-0 after extra time (does this start to sound familiar?) then we go to penalties and we lose 5-4 Can fate be THAT cruel to us yet again? We shall see.
You could reinvent it Ernie. Make the goal bigger -like the whole end of the pitch so the scores gets higher. Add Time outs for TV adverts and allow runs to the kitchen for pop corn and hotdogs and more of the fizzy watery stuff called Bud. Expand the substitures so the poor things don't get too tired. Then your fat atheletes could play, like now. Make sure it's impossible for a draw (tie) and then only one country might play and you can call it a World Series.
The reality is Football will stay as it is - the Worlds most popular sport and the US will improve even more and in two generations it will be the most popular sport in the US as it is everywhere else......
