Hi all-

My fiance and I will be on the island the 2nd week in August for our honeymoon. We're staying at Akbol and I have some questions for people with experience.

-Anyone know much about Akbol? Is it good? I know its north of the cut but that's about it. How is the restaurant on site? Are there other restaurants/bars within walking distance?

-We'll be coming from Playa Del Carmen. Seems to me the best way is to bus down to Chetumal and catch the express boat to AC. Is this correct?

-We are thinking about diving with Chuck and Robbies. Anyone ever used them?

- What's the best way to get around for the week? Golf carts are probably too expensive. We are thinking about renting bikes. Is 40usd for the week per bike about right? Who would you recommend?

-If not biking, it seems the water ferry would be the best (cheapest) way to go as opposed to water taxi. Just can't be in a hurry for the ferry since it only runs once an hour, correct? Would it just stop at Akbol's pier?

Thanks for your help!

-Christopher

Akbol's restaurant usually gets good reviews. Bikes are a lot cheaper than golf carts, I'm not sure as the cost per day.

Not really sure about your comment regarding water ferry's and taxi's. Coastal Express is now the only company running regularly scheduled boats up and down the island. They will be much cheaper than a private water taxi. Akbol is fairly close to town so you can probably just bike it if you are interested in saving money.

Cheers,
Carlos

I dive with Chuck and Robbie's every time I am on AC and highly recommend them.

From Playa Del Carmen the best way is to bus down to Chetumal and catch the express boat to Ambergris Caye/San Pedro Yes, correct.
Golf carts are expensive, and the road is usually mud, renting bikes
to go up and down the beach is cool in the daytime.
The Coastal Express comes by every other hour and stops at the Akbol dock. If you go out to dine at night the Coastal Express is definitely the way to go.
We pick up at all the docks in town for daily diving and snorkeling.

Akbol isn't too far up so you can ride the beach all the way from Akbol almost to the bridge...I'd recommend bikes as a cheaper alternative.

Thanks for the replies everyone. As for the biking from Akbol to the bridge, when you say you can "ride the beach" was does that mean exactly? Are you talking about riding in the sand or is there some sort of path that is easy to cycle through? Thanks.

There is a bike path that workers use to go to work and back daily so its beaten down pretty good , but still sand.

I can also recommend Chuck and Robbie's. (no slight to Elbert intended)

Akbol is great - you will be very happy with the resort! The restaurant serves great food (especially for breakfast) and is not open for dinner.

Close by (within walking distance) are:

Capricorn (expensive, but romantic for your honeymoon "splurge worthy")
Aji's tapas (they may be closed in August)
Captain Morgan's Tuesday night is fun
Lazy Croc for BBQ - open Friday - Sunday (close at 6 pm, so not a dinner place)
