The Embassy of the United States of America, in collaboration with U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS), is pleased to announce the visit of Wayne Parrott, PhD. Dr. Parrott is Professor of Plant Breeding and Genetics at the University of Georgia, USA with over 30 years of international experience in the scientific study of biotechnology and is in Belize to speak on biotechnology as well as meet with government officials to discuss biotechnology issues.

The presentation is part of a regional biotechnology program. Dr. Parrott visits El Salvador June 24-25; Honduras June 27-30; and Belize July 1-2. The presentation entitled “Biotechnology and Agricultural Competitiveness” will review the scientific achievements of biotechnology as it applies to agriculture, addressing the ecological and environmental benefits of using genetically enhanced crops, and will highlight the positive impact of technology for the economic development of Belize.

When an anouncement like the above one is made, all my red lights come on. There are two important words missing from the text GENETIC MODIFICATION.
For make no mistake about it, that is what all this is about.
Genetic modification known world wide as GM, is banned in many countries as the long term effects of playing with genes is, despite what some scientists say, unknown.
I am sure the "positive impact of technology" will be highlighted.
One question however needs to be asked before we go any further.
Who paid for Professor Parrott's visit? It would not by any chance be the worlds largest agrochemical company and leading advocate of GM Monsanto would it?
GM is banned across Europe.

An interesting read
Belize needs to be insulted sometimes, and always suspicious of companys that have chosen Belize to operate.
If the US and Europe have said No or have safety regulations to stringent to operate profitability, they feel like a third world country might not be smart enough to stop them from operating there.
In Salvador, and Honduras you can get away with anything, their a total unregulated area for industry to [#%!] over with completely screwed corrupt governments so I'm insulted Belize is listed with them.
Tell me I have a bad attitude!

No Sir, you are spot on. If anyone, even US big business wants to come here and talk to our farmers or the government, let them say plainly why and be honest enough to tell us the truth. GM has a very bad reputation around the world, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
There has been trial work done which showed that some insects other than the targetted ones are also killed by GM crops, also that mutated genes can migrate via pollen from one plant species to another miles away.
There is also evidence that new strains of allergy can arise from mutated pollens.
Needless to say some scientists have expressed doubts about the trial work done. Just like some scientists doubted the research work on cigarette smoking. don't forget back in the sixties some doctors were PAID to recommend smoking as beneficial in adverts. And their research work was funded by ?????
it is difficult to sort out truth from fiction in this type of thing. fortunately we don't have to.
JUST SAY NO. much too risky. What effect will genetic engineering have on mankind in a couple of generations? Anyone who claims to answer that is lying.
