LOL those were the days when it was a real interesting time to be a foreign dive shop owner I have stories that would make your hair curl, but thinking back it was all part of the adventure.

Elbert has been here long enough to remember those days but decided not to open his dive shop until all that was in the past.

I think he is Pretty smart really, considering what Larry and I had to go through to own dive shops in those days.

Also he has been in Belize and on the island almost 20 years as part of the community he is a naturalized Belizean and Ambergris Caye is his home.

He has earned the right to refer to things as OURs after 20 years living on the island as he is part of the community and Ambergris Caye and Belize is his HOME.

There is not one amongst them that supports drilling, which is not surprising. Having said that the last meeting there didn't seem to be a single person who knew actually what they were opposing as everyone who spoke was not in possession of any relevant facts about the oil business.

I was just trying to comment on your rather unpleasant tone towards Bywarren, Gaz, but I see you've thought better of it anyway.

Well that might be a clue to educate people as most people only see what is splashed all over the TV. If it goes to a vote of course people will vote against it as they have NOTHING TO GAIN FROM DRILLING FOR OIL in Belize.

They can only see the negative aspect of it.

You are right, Gaz. Being a citizen of Belize with the right to vote gives one more "weight" to their opinions. Hopefully with that right they accept the responsibility to become informed on issues and not form an opinion on what might only be in one segement of societies interests.
I've always thought there should be some kind of intelligence test required before being given a voting card. But then that would take away the "weight" that some people now enjoy. smile

Also, when it come to the word "ours", it is "your" elected officials that make the decisions. Outside interests are totally controlled by those decisions.

it has been said that the drilling would not start until all the preventive and clean up plans and gear are in place.
they said the same thing about the dam.
the GOB had to be taken to court to force the dam people to do what they were required to do YEARS BEFORE!
there will be no difference with the oil people. thats why they like doing business here. they can cut all the corners they want without any repercussion.

Well, that was a total waste of time. It was the MOST uninspiring presentation I have ever been to. I could not see the videos because of the line of camera men and I could not hear because after being told 6 times that the back of the room could not hear, they just ignored it.
I left after 1 hour incredibly frustrated and really depressed because these people will not lead anyone to agitate against drilling.
