We will be moving to Ambergris Caye early next year.We need some help with Health insurance,is any company accepted in Belize? What do most of you do with regards to insurance?
We realize it will be much different than when we visited on vacations. What else should we be prepared for?
Any info appreciated.

For the day to day health issues, we just pay cash at the doctor. Dr rates here are very reasonable. For major medical insurance, we use www.imglobal.com. {knock on wood} we haven't made a claim yet, so I can't comment on how easy they would be to work with.

You need to be very careful doing this as there are numerous ways you can find yourself without coverage when you need it most. Make sure you are with a well respected and capitalized company. I almost always recommend European insurers (f you speak any German and can qualify then buy a German policy) rather than American. Travel insurance is not health insurance though health insurance can be also be travel insurance. Just imagine the worst possible scenario and make sure your policy specifically covers that.

I'm in the process of signing up with Bupa - www.bupa.com a British company.

Quick question. I have heard about Rf&g insurance numerous times on the message board but I wanted to know if this international co. covers you in Belize and in the U.S. if you have a policy. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

R F & G is the name of the property insurer in Belize.
This office sells insurance on behalf of BUPA and assists in customer interaction with BUPA.
The BUPA policy is written for people who are primarily residing outside the US and Canada, and it covers you worldwide if you qualify.
Specifically, if you live in Belize full-time, and seek medical care in the US you are covered. There is a huge list of preferred providers in the US and you can have other providers approved if need be. Just like any other insurance, it's a pain in the neck to make a claim, but they have good policies and they do pay.

Hello Diane,

is all RF&G Health Insurance underwritten through BUPA. We're with RF&G now after the sad demise of British Fidelity/CLICO and it doesn't mention BUPA in the paperwork and is a LOT cheaper than BUPA

Thanks Diane for the info. My wife and I will be permanent residents on Ambergris come November. We now have U.S. health insurance but want to look into different options, especially international insurance that would cover us in Belize or if we had something major, we could get treatment back in the U.S. We will look into it definitely.

Worth the air ambulance alone, which can run up to US$25,000.00 and a real life saver. Most air emergencies are taken to Jackson Memorial in Miami and docs there have commented on the quality of first response and stablizing done in Belize by our docs. Very good policies and they pay. I've seen it in action and its impressive.
