The cost of living keeps going up. Most people already know that but confirmation came today from the Statistical Institute of Belize, which released the latest consumer price Index. According to the document, following declines for three consecutive quarters, the overall price level rose by zero point eight percent between May and August 2009. According to the Statistical Institute, the modest turnaround in inflation largely reflects the relative volatility in crude oil prices and the continued upward movements in fuel prices over the past few months. The cost of transportation continued to rise at a faster rate than other goods and services, increasing by three point five percent in the three month period. The most significant increases were in gasoline and diesel prices. Gas prices went up by nine point two percent, while diesel jumped a whopping twenty one point three percent. The rent, water, fuel and power group category edged upward largely due to higher butane and kerosene prices. S.I.B. says that all groups, except for the food and beverages group, recorded increases when compared to the second quarter. The food and beverages index fell by zero point seven percent largely driven by strong declines in prices of rice and flour. It is noteworthy that the prices of onion, beans and tomatoes were up by an average of twenty six point nine percent. Up to August, consumer prices were three point six percent lower when compared to the same period of 2008. Analysts say that decline in pressure both from high energy and food prices helped to lower the index between May and August of this year.

Eight percent inflation proves cost of living is going way up
Cost of living is up. But just in case you weren't sure about the inflation figures, a release from the Statistical Institute of Belize confirms an overall increase in price of goods and services. The Institute reports that the overall price level rose by point eight percent between May and August of this year. The rate of inflation reflects the increase in crude oil and butane prices and the continued upwards scale over the past months.

This has had a trickling effect on almost every other product and service. Gasoline and diesel prices were the highest at nine point two and twenty one point three percent respectively. The index also shows that all groups, except for the food and beverage groups recorded increases over the last quarter of this year. But the prices of fuel and butane were not the only ones to skyrocket, as the prices of onion, beans and tomatoes were also up.

Time to develop that Milpa!
My neighbor grow a surprising amount of fruit and vegetable for the island.
Papaya, cantaloupe, watermelon, Sweet basil, tomato, okra, bell pepper,.. its a talent knowing how to accomplish this on a sandy island. My neighbor on the other side has a pig and another neighbor has chickens. They get snapper with a handline from the end of the dock. All ride bicycles ...its sometimes is just an attitude and style.

Here are the Belize City prices following a price change on 23 May 2010:

Premium gasoline: BZ$9.67 per gallon
Regular gasoline: BZ$9.37 per gallon
Diesel: BZ$8.14 per gallon.

Prices may be higher in the districts due to transportation costs.

I haven't heard of any changes since then.

Funny thing is that construction costs are also down. based on my conversations with contractors materials for construction are also down.

2 years ago you would be looking at about $150.00USD per square foot and now that number is closer to $100.00 USD (good quality concrete construction).

Following the latest increase on 9 August 2010, current fuel prices are:
Premium gasoline: BZ$9.75 per gallon
Regular gasoline: BZ$9.44 per gallon
Diesel: BZ$8.51 per gallon.

These are the prices in Belize City; prices may be higher in the districts due to transportation costs.

Food prices are up in Mexico too by at least 20% from last year, in addition to that we are getting somewhere in the 12 pesos exchange rate on U.S. dollars, down from 14 from last year.
