Kindle in Belize?
|
|
Was just about to buy the new kindle...$139 seems like a good deal...but read that the books that we have access to in Belize is no where near the full list. That some editors don't license their books in foreign countries.
Anyone had a problem with that? If I can't get the books and newspapers I want...doesn't make sense to buy it.

I haven't had a problem downloading any books at all from the well stocked Kindle library of titles - and my tastes are very eclectic. However, I've been using the Kindle app for Ipad. I would think that it would be similar though, if it's available through Amazon for Ipad here in Belize, it should be fine for the Kindle. A friend here has a Kindle and she's never mentioned having any problems downloading content here.
Now if they would just take the blocks off of Hulu and ABC.com and those types of things so I could watch streaming video without getting the "sorry, this is not licensed for viewing outside the United States" message, I'd be a really happy camper.
I would highly recommend a Kindle purchase. My friend loves hers and I'm so thrilled to be able to get almost any book I want in less than a minute. It sure beats ordering it, having it sent to friends in the States and waiting for them to bring it down for me.

Kindle books cost anywhere between $0 and $19.99. Many are free and most are less than $10.00 US.

how did you sync your Kindle to your ipad? I too snagged my Kindle early on and absolutely love it. It's nice, now that there are more out there, to not get as many stares from people trying to figure out what that "thing" is. Amazon also has a free Kindle app you can install on your PC laptop or desktop. Not sure about Macs.

BTW, The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo and the next book are super catchy. Let me know if anyone has #3 on the island!

Thurston and I each have a kindle so we can download different books and trade off. Discovered our iPad will only accept one amazon kindle account. I think the apple app does not have quite as good a selection as kindle and the books are a little more expensive. The new $139 price for the kindle is great and if you are an avid reader much more economical then shipping books down. Agreed Elbert, the lit is great.

Sorry, BrusselSprout, I don't have "The girl who kicked the hornet's nest" on the island, but I did just finish reading the hardcover a couple of weeks ago. It was good but didn't capture me as the first two did. Perhaps the Steig Larsson just didn't have the opportunity to brush it up before his death. So sad there will be no more great books from him.
Taken from article about Mr. Larsson: "During 2004 Stieg Larsson made minor adjustments to his two finished books and finished the third. When he died in November 2004, it was only a few months before the first book of the Millennium-series was released to the Swedish audience and became an immediate success."

Is Girl with the Dragon Tattoo really good? I thumbed thru it when it first came out and was not "caught" by it. However, it has been made into a movie (or is in production), so it must be quite good.

Just an update with a little side note that may be of help to some of you - I am on a mailing list that emails me when Amazon features books for free. When I clicked the link using my computer and it went to Amazon.com they came up at $2.00. On the left hand side a little box said, "You are in Latin America. If you'd like to change your location, please do so" and I changed it to the U.S. and voila - they were free. I thought that was interesting. So beware of price changes.
That's the only problem I have with Kindle/IBooks, if you're an avid reader the charges can add up fast. IBooks has been having some pretty good books for free and you can always read the classics for free on both. The free or discounted books are a good way to find new authors and then they hook you and you end up buying more of their work. It's win/win. But on the other hand, some of them are truly terrible.
With all of the buzz about The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, I'm going to have to download the sample and see what it's all about.

Been thinking seriously of buying a Kindle, so very interested in this thread. I read one or two books a week, and being lazy, don't get them from the library. And being lazy, once realized I could get Amazon to deliver them to my front door, rarely even pick them up at the store anymore. The cost is getting ridiculous, but worse than that is the storage problem. In my house, there's so many bookshelves and places made into bookshelves and boxes full of books, that I could open my own library.
Certainly a Kindle will take care of my storage problem, but what about cost? Discounting purchase price of Kindle, will the cost be similar?

Depending on the type of books that you read, it could be similar. It seems to be that most books are comparable to the prices listed for other formats. It's just that I tend to buy more recent books on the Kindle than I would normally buy, usually I'd wait for the paperback, so I'm ending up with a lot of $9.99 or even $12.99 books, but that's a deal compared with hardcover prices and you save on shipping. Not to mention saving on space. People who have them usually marvel about it - it's a really fun toy. I'd say go for it.

Wouldn't it be nice if some genius could figure out how we could share our kindle reads with one another? Maybe we could also start some kind of list of recent reads to share. It's not exactly what you're looking for but here's to hoping that it's a step in the right direction . . . For those of us using Ipads, Iphones, Ipod Touch, Androids, Blackberries and/or computers for reading, Barnes and Noble's Nook app offers a new option for sharing. It's called LendMe and it's in beta. This is what is says - "About Lending - You can lend an eligible title once to any of your friends or family from your Library, nook or eReader. Once the loan period is up, or if they return it sooner, you can read it again" You send an email to the person to whom you wish to share your book and they can read it free for 14 days. I'm hoping that this starts a trend and that Amazon and Apple start similar programs for Kindle and IBooks. Wouldn't that be wonderful?

OK, I did it . . ordered the Kindle. However, as a Canadian, it's going to cost me more than $139 and also, they are out of stock so taking orders for much later delivery. Brusselsprout, if you are wanting one to be waiting for you, you'd best order it now.

I hear what you are saying Pam, but finding books on the exchange shelf, whilst on my travels, has taken me to some wonderful and/or fun authors. I may not have found Stieg Larrson, except for finding "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" on a bookshelf at a hotel, same with Harlan Coben "Deal Breaker". Now I own complete sets of their works, mostly in paperback and purchased through Amazon. So, I'm still into picking up a book that looks interesting to me, off of an exchange shelf.

My Kindle is on its way. Supposed to arrive next week! I'm really looking forward to this . . in the meantime, I just received a box of about 10-12 books. I guess I should read them first before I start to play with the Kindle?

As far as sharing, my husband and I have great success sharing kindle books and iPad books. The thing about one account on iPad actually saves money. When he downloads a book into his iPad it goes to my archive automatically. I just have to remember his password.

We haven't had any trouble, at all with that. The one tha doesn't seem to work here is Barnes and Noble. We download those from the States. But we hardly need to. IBooks and Amazon seem to have everything we want.

It does not matter where you and your kindle are physically located. what matters is whether you have a financial identity (credit card and billing address that goes with it) in the USA. If you do, you can have a "USA" kindle, you can buy books at the "USA rate" and can download your books into your wireless kindle anywhere. Have your kindle shipped to a USA address and then bring with/send with someone. But in order to set up a USA amazon account you must have the USA financial identity. I live in Panama and I do all those things because I still have a financial identity in the USA and I use that identity for my amazon account.

Not so. No IP checking is done and you can use the wireless from anywhere or alternatively (if you don't have access to wireless internet) go to an internet cafe with your laptop, plug your kindle into your laptop and choose "download to computer" with your kindle being your auxiliary "hard drive" by virtue of the USB connection.
