Hello, if we decide to go over to Caulker Caye for a day trip, what is the recommended ferry to take? How long is the ride over and cost? Also where is the ferry dock/pier?
Thanks, Michael........

Water taxis leave every 1-1/2 hours, the schedule alternating between the two companies. In San Pedro, the docks are side-by-side for the two companies, and the price/service is the same. Just choose what time you want to go. Right now they are running a special rate and its 20 bzd round trip, but the price is going to go up in November. When you arrive on Caye Caulker, the docks are about 300 feet apart. For the San Pedro Belize Express, their office is on Avenida Hicaco (Front Street) across from the police station. For Caye Caulker Water Taxi, their office is on their pier. The ride is 20-30 minutes. There is a 3rd company now operating, don't know where they leave/arrive.

I was just told that the Caye Caulker Water taxi has been moved down to the dock in front of Cholo's Bar(and there are no boats at the dock this morning, so I guess its true). The San Pedro Belize Express is still in front of Latitudes Cafe and La Playa Lounge though, and they were the ones that lowered their prices.

As for the prices, I know that SP Belize Express is still doing round trips to Chetumal for $70, but I havent heard if their prices went up for Caye Caulker and for Belize City.

2 Things:
1. I went on the boats that pick up on the lagoon side. I think they are called something like Water Jets, or Jets Express, etc. Something like that. Anyways...I got on that tiny boat at 6am to try and get to BZ City early. Wow, was that stupid. We didnt leave the dock until about 6:10-6:15, and when we stopped in Caye Caulker, they completely overloaded the boat. People were literally climbing in through the front windows and sitting on cargo. I heard the captain say that the boat was only rated for 42 people. I personally counted 57 people on there, plus cargo, plus I probably missed a couple people. So the whole trip to BZ City was done at the rip roaring speed of about 15 mph. The boat was constantly in an uncontrollable sway that made me keep my hand on a life jacket at all times. I was sitting in the very back of the boat was so I was completely soaking wet as if I jumped into the ocean and then jumped right back in the boat. It was, BY FAR, the worst boat ride that I have ever taken in my life. And to top it all off, when I got to Belize City, the San Pedro Belize Express boat that leaves AC at 7am was unloading its people. Glad I got up an extra hour early for a stressful and uncomfortable boat ride.

2. On a better note, I took the SP Belize Express the other day and stopped into the little cafe on the beach before we left. I am guessing thats the Latitudes Cafe referred to above(I've been back 2 or 3 times and I keep forgetting to look at the name). Anyways, I had eaten there almost a year ago and the food was mediocre, at best. There was no meat, poor service, etc. Its definitely better now. I had a wrap and a milkshake, and my wife had a sandwich and a smoothie. Cant say enough good things about it really. The owner was there and he was a really nice younger guy. The food was much better than our first experience there....I wish everyone in Belize made a sandwich like that. I feel like I finally got what I was paying for and it was very reasonably priced. I've gone back 2 or 3 more times and seen other business owners there (owner from Gecko Graphics, owner of Sew What, and some of the "higher-ups" from Social Security and from Labour Dept office), so I guess it is catching on a little better. I haven't gone to in to try out their full breakfast items yet (I just keep getting the same breakfast wrap), but I think they are doing a full breakfast now. I just remember seeing some crazy grilled cheese concoction on the menu that sounded so deliciously unhealthy! Finally something different! Anyways, just wanted to finish my rant on a positive note instead of just complaining. Dont want to be a downer on everyone's day. Cheers and have a good day!
