Belize draws 0-0 with Trinidad & Tobago in Football friendly
The Belize national football team played to a scoreless draw with the Soca Warriors of Trinidad and Tobago in a friendly football match hosted by the Football Federation of Belize at the FIFA goal Project in Belmopan on Friday, September 10.
Belize’s international players Harrison Roches, Elroy Kuylen and Elroy Smith led the attack with the help of Orlando “Lichy” Jimenez, Victor Morales and Clifton West, but met stiff resistance from the Soca Warrior defenders Carlyle Mitchell, Makan Bishop, Kariem Young and Jovin Jones. T&T’s able goalkeeper Marvin Philip handled the other challenges.
Down at the other end of the field Kerry Baptiste led the visitors’ attacks, with the help of Hughton Hector and Matthew Bartolomew on the wing and midfielders Trent Noel, Ataulla Guerra, and Kevin Cupid, but they were held in check by the Belizean defenders Dalton Eiley, Bernard Linares, Eian Gaynair and Everald Trapp, who broke up their plays and retuned the ball to their midfieldrs to renew the attack.
Even when the visitors forced the Belize defense to dump the ball over the goal-line and won a corner kick, the Belize defense held tight, with goalkeeper Shane Orio sometimes coming out of goal to punch the ball clear or getting up the vertical to grab and save.
Soca Warriors coach Russell Latapy introduced Jason Macarno into the game, and later Daniel Cyrus replaced a banged up Trent Noel.

Team Belize was forced to play the ball on the ground, because the tall Trinidad defenders won most of the aerial contests for headers. In one such confrontation, Carlyle Mitchell jumped so high that he almost sat on Lichy Jimenez shoulder coming down. Michell landed badly but was soon able to continue. The game was still a scoreless draw at intermission.
Deon Burgess replaced Orlando Jimenez in the second half, and Belize’s best opportunity to score came when Jovan Jones took down Victor Morales who had gotten away on a solo break for the goal. The referee awarded Belize a penalty but Elroy Smith’s attempt to convert failed when his shot hit the crossbar.
T&T’s Kevin Carter relieved Ataula Guerra, while Belize’s Harrison Tasher replaced Morales and Lisbey Castillo took over from Clifton West. Burgess exploded with a shot to fnish a pass from Roches, but the ball sailed over the crossbar. Roches also got off a shot that Marvin Philip managed to stop and grabbed on the second attempt to deny Elroy Smith, who had darted in to try to recover the rebound.
Down at the other end, Kevon Carter got off a dangerous shot that screamed past the goal mouth and Shane Orio’s outstretched glove. At the nd of regulation time, both sides settled for a scoreless but well contested match.
