As times turn tough, scam artists are looking for more and more ways to elicit your hard earned cash thru bogus medical donations. We have all been approached by people asking for money for this and for that. And there are some legitimate needs for expensive medical treatment. But before you randomly donate to anyone asking for money, make sure you know it is a bonafide medical procedure. How will you know it is a real need and not a scam?
The person soliciting donations will have a letter from the village council authorizing their solicitation of donations, they will also have a letter from the service provider outlining what the procedure is.
Take the time to check the date on the letter to make sure it is a recent authorization.
Make sure it is the original letter with an original signature and stamp.
Check the back side of the paper, because donations are to be written down on the back. Make sure they haven't met or exceeded their request already.
Make sure they are from the area you are visiting. In essence, KNOW who you are donating to, before you just give give give.
When scam artists are in operation, it seriously affects the ability of people with legitimate needs to collect what they need from an already financially stressed out community.

This is not only true for Caye Caulker, also for Ambergris Caye and the rest of Belize. Some sly characters use (old) manipulated letter, raffle for a good cause, claim to collect for recent cause but in reality pocket the money. It's a very profitable way of living.

When presented with a request for donation, ask for the name of the collector and take a minute to call the number on the letter or credentials. Know who you are dealing with and for what you are donating!
